Autofill in Numbers

I have recently started using numbers on Mac. I used to work on Excel.

I am having an issue with Autofill.

I usually work with larges series and I use autofill quite often.

I have a series as follows : 1, 2, 3.

I click on table, autofill, autofill down. it gives me "1" in all cells instead of "1, 2, 3 ,4, 5 ..."

however when I drag it, It gives the correct series.

Any idea why clicking autofill down doesn't work as expected ?

If you have a cell with a value of “1” (A1=1) and tell it to fill down, it will do exactly that: it will insert the value “1” into each cell.

if you have two cells, one with a value of “1” and the next with a value of “2” (A1=1,A2=2) then it will recognize and continue the series (A3=3,A4=4, etc.)

If filling a series, make sure you have at least two cells selected before attempting to fill.

Alternatively, you could use A1=1, A2=A1+1. Then you can just select, and paste values to remove the formulas (or keep them if the file is small).

Just confirming here what you observed, which (apparently) differs from another posters' experience.

Start with this series:

Choose Table > Autofill Cells > Autofill Down from the menu:

The result:

I tried out Edit > Fill Down in Excel in a similar way and get the same result as the menu approach in Numbers: repeated 1s.

As you observed in your original post, though, just dragging down the yellow dot does extend the series in Numbers as expected.

So your experience is consistent with what ildiavolo1990 described, and I confirmed on my machine, and you were simply repeating what was stated in the original post:

however when I drag it, It gives the correct series.

Not sure exactly what Table > Autofill > Autofill Down is there for. I've never tried to use it before, and there seem to be easier ways to do what it does.
