Apple Notes Blank

Sometimes when I go to my notes on my phone, the contents of my notes have disappeared. The only way I have been able to get them back is by going to my notes on my computer and editing the note where the content shows up.

To be clear - is it not a login issue. I am logged in to all of my accounts and I am able to see my notes. The title of the note is there, the subtext is there, but when I click the note, it is blank. Oddly enough, it will let me write in the note but with "invisible ink" so I don't see anything when I am typing, but if I leave the note, I can see gibberish in the subtext. See photos below.

So that image shows what I see even if I'm writing (of course there is a keyboard below). The second image shows what shows up after I write something, but if I click the note, I see nothing! Very frustrating when I need the content of a note when I only have my phone. I am not having this problem with my computer. Sometimes if I close out of notes, it lets me see what I'm writing again, but I still can't access the data on a note that is blanked out on my phone until I open it and edit it on my computer and they resync... its a confusing problem, I hope I have explained it clearly but if you need clarification just let me know.

I just got a brand new iPhone XR. Please help!

Hello Ninaxtina1,

Thanks for that info and for choosing the Apple Support Communities. If I understand correctly, you are unable to see contents of notes on your iPhone, unless you edit the notes on your computer. If you haven't already, please force close the Notes app and restart your device as iOS clears cached data and does other system optimizations when you turn your device off and on.

Force an app to close on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Next, make sure your iPhone is fully up to date, as the updates contain stability fixes that can resolve issues like yours, as well as important security updates to keep your iPhone safe. If you're still having this issue, please contact Apple for further assistance.

Update the iOS software on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Cheers!

I also experience this, and it’s a massive pain as it happens several times a day as I’m constantly using notes on iPad Pro on iOS13.7. The problem has persisted through several updates of iOS and I find the best way to resolve it is to quit notes, reopen then go onto another account, then back to the account in which your notes are stored. Then they will display again.

The radio silence from Apple on this issue apart from “restart the device” is less than impressive. My main use of my iPad has been almost unusable for nearly six months now. These things are what undermines users’ faith in Apple.

Now it’s November and I have had this problem for months. So very annoying. Could someone write in simple terms bow to quit notes please for me to try that. I have tried switching on and off, swiped up and I get control centre and if I press on notes there it thinks I want to type a new note and I don’t I just want to see a particular note I have stored, some old notes are there and some aren’t. Thanks

Content of notes just disappeared while using the same this morning on iPhone X. As suggested above tried after the rebooting of device but no luck. Notes name is the same but no content are seen. Tried logging on iCloud from my Windows computer as well. I can see the note there with the same name and when tried opening with the known password it did not work as a password incorrect pop-up, in spite of the correct password. It's quite annoying for having loss of all collective data of years for fault of mine. Can someone help in this to restore back the data.

A year and a month later and it’s still happening. Killing the app doesn’t help me. I need to restart my phone or look on my laptop, which isn’t useful when I’m standing in the middle of a store trying to look at my list. Yes, first world problems. It would just be cool if someone at Apple would take notice and fix the problem on phones we chose to spend a thousand dollars on. Lesson learned.

I have a "fix" for this, actually more of a workaround, which allows you to access the note but not to edit it within Notes. When you pull up the blank note, hit the share icon (center bottom on my iPhone X) and text (or email) it to yourself. Somehow, the content is not actually gone, just invisible, because it will appear for sharing. This is useful, for example, with a shopping list you've made but find had gone missing when you get to the store. Text it to yourself from the seemingly blank note and your content will reappear. You can edit the content before hitting send, if desired. This has saved me many times.

I also notice that the content eventually seems to reappear within Notes without rebooting, seemingly at random.

Hope this helps!

This is crazy. Just after I posted my reply in this topic, I started doing some other things that did not involve my phone. After about 5 minutes I realized that although I had my earbuds “implanted” in my ears but I wasn’t listening to music, podcast, audiobook. Nothing. I opened the TuneIn app and reflexively opened the Notes app. Voilà! All my notes appeared!

Maybe it has something to do with syncing and iCloud??

Same problem with notes. Have had it for several years on both 6 and 8. Updated IOS. Problem getting more frequent. Always occurs as I am doing some sort of edit or addition to an existing note. Problem always solved with a restart but this is ridiculous. The weird thing is that I can type onto the now-blank note and see nothing. After the restart the newly-typed characters are visible. There is simply no excuse for this glitch.

I must be quite impatient or maybe just narky but it seems to annoy me slightly, which builds with each new reply I read, when people say “me too”, then go on to repeat the exact same symptoms over and over as if they haven’t read the previous replies or even the original question. Would be more helpful if someone could just offer a solution or advice but not repeated same advice, which is another bug bear. I won’t mention those looking for Apple to be amongst the Community and reading these pages of repeats.

if anyone is wondering why I’m so grumpy, well it’s because I googled this bug hoping to find a solution and it’s now 02:17 am as it’s taken me this long to go through everyone’s replies, hoping fir a solution, only to find I’ve practically just read the same reply over and over again and haven’t got any further forward!!! Does this frustrate anyone else. It would be like contacting IT for a solution and them asking you 500 times “Have you switched your computer on?” 🤣😂🤣😂 Sorry folks but please..... tearing my hair out here!!!

@angebabes, your frustration is understandable, but I can tell you as someone who is subscribed to this thread and who receives emails each time someone replies, there have been no solutions to this issue. Users have described variations on the theme of quitting notes and restarting, but none of us can fix this and Apple apparently don’t want to say a thing about it, which is annoying a lot of people. In fact I’m wrong - there was that one guy who added that you could access the content of the note by hitting the “share” button then “mail”, but that’s only slightly faster than double tapping the home button and quitting notes via the quick launcher then restarting the app, which is what I normally do.

Really it’s only Apple who can get to the bottom of this and fix it in a software update. Until then, this thread likely will just be users moaning about how annoying it is.
