SERIES 5: Can’t use Siri to send messages

Apple Watch Series 5. WatchOS 6.1. iOS 13.2.3

When using Siri to send a new message, I get a message on the watch that says “Sorry, there was a problem with the app” and it shows a button that says “Open Messages.”

When I press the button, messages flashes for a second then crashes. So, as of now, it’s impossible to compose a new message on the watch.

I asked a friend to try this with his Series 2, running an older OS and it works fine.

Apple has has escalated this issue to engineering and I’m waiting to hear back from them.

Anyone else experiencing this issue?

Having exactly the same problem. I’ve spoken to Apple they didn’t seem to know what it was they wanted to do more diagnostics in the end I said don’t worry it’s only a small problem. I’ve been searching the net every day trying to find someone else who has the same problem. I’m running Apple series 4 watch... I don’t believe the reinstall the software scenario at all mine just started about four days ago are use mine every single day I’ve had no updates in the last few days on Watch or phone this is something in the software at their end I suspect. Messages out works absolutely fine can send messages manually and interestingly I can also send a message clear by creating a Siri shortcut so I’ve sent a message to my wife to say I’m on my way home I created a shortcut called on my way that sends a message to her by using the command on my way. The watch then sends a message to my wife saying I’m on my way home using the Messages app. I think Apple need to Look into this

My thoughts are this is a Siri server side issue as the messages app works fine if I use it manually on the watch and I can send using Siri via creating a shortcut it’s a permission issue I reckon they changed something and it’s slowly effecting people . Until they get enough reports they’ll do nothing but as more people experience it and I think. eventually a lot of users will have it happen then they’ll fix it quickly.

Just testing my watch and it’s not working no update seems to be needed. As I suspected I think the problem was on the Siri servers talking to the Apple Watch and they were able to do something there and on their own servers. Anyway all seems to be working now. Test your see if it works I just said send a text and it now says whom should I send a text to

That’s great news. If more and more people get it Apple will be forced to fix it. I think it’s a Siri issue as I can send message from the watch just can’t use Siri. Hoping more people find this post ! It’s no biggie for me as I rate use Siri for messages and I’ve found a work round as shortcuts will send one to my wife saying I’m on my way and that was my main one I used Siri for ...

Same here. Had a long chat with Apple support although if you’re on the beta program of course they won’t support the phone. However the problem is with the watch which is not on the beta program. The last update had something to do with correcting dictation this is somewhat of a coincidence. Particularly as the problem is dictating text messages. I’m hoping that when a future update comes out they will fix this problem. I have reported this via the BT feedback app. Hopefully someone in Apple will realise that something is broken soon.

hey there- thanks for posting this! I started having this issue too and there was nothing online about it.

I actually just got a series 5, so I returned it and got a new one. The issue persists.

I have an iphone 7 plus. Given that this issue isn't more widespread, I'm wondering if the issue is actually with ios? Once I got the new 'replacement' watch, the issue existed both on 6.0 (that was preloaded) and on 6.1. I'm not running beta software but the latest iOS which is 13.2.3

What iphone does everyone else have?
