How do I get exif data working again in Catalina?

I'm having the same problem as this unanswered question: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/250010248

Reviewing photos in finder was substantially easier when I could view the exif data at a glance in the gallery view. Now that I've updated to Catalina, I can't get the exif data in the gallery view, but it also doesn't show up in the file info screen either.

How do we get the exif data support back?

Thanks!!

Ensure that you have Spotlight indexing the Images category in System Preferences : Spotlight : Search Results, and that your Macintosh HD is not still in that Spotlight Privacy panel (as mine was) — which would prevent the indexing that would reveal image EXIF and PDF metadata. Once I indexed the boot drive, the EXIF and PDF metadata became available once again.
