New 16” MBP Random Restarts and LockUps

On my new 16 inch MacBook Pro, when the machine is idle, I get about four random reboots a day. And, when the machine is in use, at least one lock up per day that requires a reboot.

I did not use migration assistant when the machine was set up, it is a fresh install. Hardware check shows no errors… Extremely frustrating.

This is always the message upon each random restart

BAD MAGIC! (flag set in iBoot panic header), no macOS panic log available

Needless to say… This is very frustrating! Anyone else had this issue?

Just an update on my progress. My prior MacBook would unexpectedly freeze for 10 seconds, then the fans would go 100% for 5 seconds, and the machine would then power off or restart. I would check the logs after this issue and get a "bad magic" kernel panic. They sent me a brand new replacement. This issue seems to be resolved with a brand new replacement. This is a hardware issue (unless you're having panics due to the most recent version of Catalina). If you're having kernel panics, bad magic issues, or unexpected shut downs/reboots, then I'd recommend to get a replacement as soon as possible. This is the only way to resolve this issue.

I spent countless hours troubleshooting the issue with Apple and sending it out for repair twice. The first repair, they only reinstalled MacOS and updated my T2 firmware. This didn't resolve it. The second repair, they replaced my Touch ID Board and Logic Board. This also didn't resolve the issue. I then requested a new replacement (since I'm still within my warranty). They approved this and were able to send me this brand new replacement. This replacement does NOT have any issues and now the issue is resolved.

Please keep in mind that Apple (US) will only send a replacement after a certain number of repair attempts (usually 2-3 attempts), if you're past the 14-day return date. So please make sure to get started on the repair process and after the second/third repair, ask for a replacement. This is the only way to resolve the issue. It was the only way for me to resolve the unexpected shutdowns and reboots with "Bad Magic" kernel panics. I have read prior that this is the only way others have fully resolved this issue. I hope you all have the same success as me!

I've disabled Power Nap and the issue remains.

The problem is absolutely when the Mac goes into sleep mode.

I'm almost sure that this is related to the Radeon Drivers, since I could reproduce the same problem on Windows Bootcamp as well.

When Windows/MacOS goes into sleep, my Macbook heats up, shuts down and the fans speed up for 1 second, then it reboots.

Disabling Power Nap won't fix the issue.

I had to prevent the Macbook from going into sleep mode on Energy settings, and setting to turn off displays to "Never".

It's a shame for a +3k Euros computer.

Just a note: Within a day of posting my original comment in this thread about the restart issues, I received an email and a direct phone call from tech support staff at Apple. I spent over thirty minutes on the phone running through the issue, answering questions, and exporting system diagnostics.

Rest assured that Apple is aware of the issue and regularly monitoring the forums. If you have not updated to the latest OS release, do so. It may solve your problem.

Thanks for your report Paul Burton1.

I had the same issue, brought the mac to the store and they changed the display and the "Lid Angle Sensor, LAS" - no idea of what is this.

The guy in charge of the fix, after explaining everything has been done, boot the mac in front of me to make sure it's all good and guess what? The problem was still there.

He spent 10 or 20 minutes trying to fix it and reading the log at the startup and then he said the logic board needs to be replaced.

I'll keep you updated.

Just an update on my issue. This issue is still occurring on my 2019 16” MacBook I got in December. The MacBook freezes completely (the whole OS, including the mouse cursor) for around 20-30 seconds. Then the fans get very loud and go full speed for around 10 seconds. Then it shuts down or reboots. I’ve been working with Apple this whole time to get the issue resolved. It has happened since the first week I’ve had it and is intermittent. Others are having similar issues and I’ve been seen posts all over. If only they were all compiled into this one discussion, Apple would possibly issue a recall or look into it. Since around December 12th, 2019, Apple had me do the following so far and here’s where I am on my process-

  1. Reinstall MacOS and restore from a time machine backup. The issue still occurred.
  2. Reinstall MacOS and don’t restore from a time machine backup. Manually reinstall applications as needed. The issue still occurred.
  3. Drive two hours to have a Genius review the MacBook. He suggested that I again reinstall MacOS but couldn’t diagnose the issue. He pushed the possibility of it being hardware (logic board) related. He asked that I mail in my laptop for repair if the issue happens after another reinstall.
  4. Reformatted the Macintosh HD and reinstalled MacOS from a USB flash drive mounted with the most recent MacOS Catalina image I downloaded from the MacOS App Stored, which is signed by Apple. The issue is still occurring.
  5. Apple sent in a repair request to send my device out for repair. It took three business days for me to get it repaired and receive it back. According to their repair notes included with the repaired MacBook, they only “reinstalled MacOS” which I find humorous because I’ve done this multiple times already per their instructions!

I received the repaired MacBook back today and we will see if these issues still persist. I’m assuming it will keep happening since they only “reinstalled MacOS” which is what they had me do multiple times already.

I’m very frustrated because this is a work machine and my business is losing production. Their USA Apple One (1) Year Limited Warranty says you can “(iii) exchange the Apple Product for a refund of your purchase price.” if the warranty is breached/can’t fix the issue. Has anyone ever got a refund for this?

I’m so tired of having down time at my business and dealing with this. I honestly spent way too much money and I’m spending my valued time having to deal with this issue. Hours of phone calls, days where the MacBook is out being repaired, hours of online chatting or texting. It’s driving me nuts and I’m not sure what to do from here.

I took screenshots of my firmware versions for all my hardware before it was sent in for repair. I’ll let you all know if they updated or downgraded firmware on any hardware and if the issue is resolved or not. I’ll keep everyone updated on my progress.

Bret see if you can get Apple Support to authorize a replacement. I have the 16" MBP and have never experienced any shut downs or kernel panics. I understand your frustration but this IS a very good quality product. Right now your frustration makes you feel like you should go back to a Windows machine, but if they were so perfect I don't think you would've bought a MacBook.

BAD MAGIC is a problem that correlates with needing a Firmware update for your T2 chip.

Where did you get that information from? Was it from my post on 03/29? I previously wrote on this forum that a T2 chip update by Apple when sending it in for repair resolved the issue but then I posted again saying that the issue still exists. Last time I sent it in, the only thing they did was reinstall MacOS and update my T2 firmware version. My MacOS version didn't change, only the T2 firmware version. This did not resolve my issue though and this is not a T2 firmware issue. My current T2 firmware version is 17P4264 and I'm on MacOS 10.15.4 (what I was using prior to sending it in for repair). This issue is not resolved by a firmware update for my T2 chip since they already did this and the problem still existed. I want people to know that in my situation the T2 firmware upgrade by Apple did NOT work. I went through that process and now have had my Logic Board and Touch ID board replaced.

I'll keep you all updated on this issue and keep an eye on my MacBook for the next month. If the issue happens again, I'll let you all know. If the issue does not happen again, I'll update this post in a month letting you all know.

If it helps, mine’s been ok the past couple of days. I went into power settings -> plugged in -> turned off sleep completely, screen saver without lock, and it’s been staying on and up and live. It’s not a good solution because I like the machine to be able to go to sleep and be more secure, but since I’m only working at home, in my home office, the security is way less a concern than when I used to go out for lunches and meetings and such. :\

I’d like it restored to normal usage. :(

Yeah it’s disappointing to spend 3k on a laptop and it’s faulty software. To get rid of the issue on mine I had to set it to never sleep or hibernate or whatever. Just stay on until I shut the power down. It no longer does it but the issue is it no longer needs my finger print to open. It stays open. Obviously this is a security issue. I also don’t know if this will get fixed if it’s the Radeon drivers. They haven’t been updated since the 16 inch MacBook Pro has come out. So I won’t hold my breath on that.
