New 16” MBP Random Restarts and LockUps

On my new 16 inch MacBook Pro, when the machine is idle, I get about four random reboots a day. And, when the machine is in use, at least one lock up per day that requires a reboot.

I did not use migration assistant when the machine was set up, it is a fresh install. Hardware check shows no errors… Extremely frustrating.

This is always the message upon each random restart

BAD MAGIC! (flag set in iBoot panic header), no macOS panic log available

Needless to say… This is very frustrating! Anyone else had this issue?

Just an update on my progress. My prior MacBook would unexpectedly freeze for 10 seconds, then the fans would go 100% for 5 seconds, and the machine would then power off or restart. I would check the logs after this issue and get a "bad magic" kernel panic. They sent me a brand new replacement. This issue seems to be resolved with a brand new replacement. This is a hardware issue (unless you're having panics due to the most recent version of Catalina). If you're having kernel panics, bad magic issues, or unexpected shut downs/reboots, then I'd recommend to get a replacement as soon as possible. This is the only way to resolve this issue.

I spent countless hours troubleshooting the issue with Apple and sending it out for repair twice. The first repair, they only reinstalled MacOS and updated my T2 firmware. This didn't resolve it. The second repair, they replaced my Touch ID Board and Logic Board. This also didn't resolve the issue. I then requested a new replacement (since I'm still within my warranty). They approved this and were able to send me this brand new replacement. This replacement does NOT have any issues and now the issue is resolved.

Please keep in mind that Apple (US) will only send a replacement after a certain number of repair attempts (usually 2-3 attempts), if you're past the 14-day return date. So please make sure to get started on the repair process and after the second/third repair, ask for a replacement. This is the only way to resolve the issue. It was the only way for me to resolve the unexpected shutdowns and reboots with "Bad Magic" kernel panics. I have read prior that this is the only way others have fully resolved this issue. I hope you all have the same success as me!

as DPJ has already noted, these forums are User-to-User forums, and Apple only provides the venue and maintains order, and a few "first responder" specialists whose mission is to chase down posts that go completely un-answered after days. Apple movers and shakers do NOT troll the forums looking for problems.

There are no standard mechanism for any one to elevate your problem from the forums to anywhere. Recently, Senior Contributors tried to pressure forum managers to "expedite" issues involving the 16-in MacBook Pro to Engineering.

We were told that Engineering uses exactly ONE method to decide what problems to address, and that method begins with a contact with Apple Support AND filing of a Bug Report [so users who give up and allow the matter to be treated as "resolved" are NOT counted], or a Return or Service event on a computer.

We (and you) are urged to refer users whose problems are not solved here to use the "Contact Support" link at the top right of every forum page. Only when the stack of problems grows large will Apple apply resources to reduce the problems. Until then, Apple (as a large ponderous organization) "does not know there is a Problem".

My apologies! I'm incredibly frustrated, non-native, and I typed it on my phone, so it became a bit of an incoherent rant. I cannot edit the post anymore, so hereby a reworked version. I hope it is clearer now. :)

Last year I experienced similar problems to the ones described in this thread, on a MacBook Pro 15” Retina 2014 running Mojave. I spent over six months trying to fix the issue via Amac, the Apple Genius Bar, other authorised repair shops, calling with Apple technical support—constantly travelling back and forth without any luck. Every time they followed the basic steps (SMC reset, reinstall of macOS, factory reset, etc), but nothing worked and the problems started occurring more and more often.

At some point the independent, authorised repair store thought it was a graphics card problem, after telling them that sometimes the screen froze and went "snowy" after closing the lid and opening it back up again. However, when trying to find the underlying issue by overloading the GPU, the problem never occurred. They sent me away, again and again, telling me my MacBook was working fine and was "surprisingly fast" for its age, even while running heavy rendering programmes.

They finally believed me after it froze in the store itself, but they still didn't manage to find any issues. Meanwhile, the crashes occurred more and more often. I actually thought myself that the issue started occurring after a Mojave update, but they convinced me that this could not be true, so I never tried to go back to a previous macOS version (which I now thoroughly regret).

In the end, I was about to graduate, so I needed a fully functioning laptop. Both Apple and the independent store told me to either take a gamble by replacing the logic board, or to buy a new laptop. I didn't want to take the gamble, because it was crystal clear that it wasn’t a hardware or a software issue, and Apple didn't offer any solution or compromise. I ended up buying a new MacBook (15") in August 2019.

At the beginning of this week, a similar issue started. With my previous MacBook it usually froze or turned black and the fans would make a lot of noise for a longer period of time, forcing me to shut it down forcefully. With the new one, it completely freezes, shuts down quickly, the fans work hard for about half a second and then it automatically restarts.

The freeze+crash has happened twice so far (within a week), again seemingly at random moments: once I clicked on a Google Search, the second time I tried to adjust the display brightness via the touch bar.

I am currently still using Mojave 10.14.6, and reading all this I'm quite wary of updating it to Catalina.

I still have warranty, thank god, but I cannot believe I’m going through this again.

Ideally I would get a replacement laptop rather than going through this insane and fruitless procedure again (or worse, ending up with replacement parts, having the MacBook work for a while, but finding the problem reoccurring while having lost warranty). But I fear that I'll have to travel back and forth again with this same issue for a while. Last time it took me 2 months to finally convince them there was an actual problem to begin with, so advice how to deal with this would be greatly appreciated. Or if you recommend updating to Catalina after all, maybe I will try that first.

Btw I live in Europe. Thanks in advance!

I've been suffering through this same issue. And after countless cals to Apple (with an extensive case log with tech support), the laptop is now in the hands of a certified hardware support company that Apple recommended. But first here's the fun I went through this past Monday (April27, 2020).

Monday had a total of 82* restarts (over the course of the entire day), 3 SMC resets, 3 NvRam (PRam) resets, many SafeBoots, one low-level reformat, and two clean OS installations (from Recovery), and a phone call with Apple Support for 1 hour and 15 minutes )with 30+ restarts happening during that call). All of which resulted in one very brick-ish Powebook. I'm thankful I have a backup laptop (my trusty 2015 Retina). I'm still well within the warranty... and I'm nearly certain this is a hardware issue at after all this.

After seeing that many, many others have had this issue, it's clear, this is on Apple to solve, especially when we pay a premium for our laptops.

* 82 is where I stopped the madness and forced it to shut down and I went to bed.

Yes I absolutely think it's worth a shot to reach out to Best Buy. While I can't speak for BB I'm would like to think that they would be a bit lenient on return policies due to COVID19, especially since you're less than a week past your return period. Reach out to them about an exchange. And that's another thing, big box stores would rather exchange something than to have a customer request a refund, so that's another good reason for you to reach out to them. Keep us updated.

I just bought a new macbook pro 16 with i9 and 5500m 8gb. Literally unboxed it and set it up. It went idle and restarted because of a problem. Got an exchange and the same thing is happening to the new exchanged unit I got in yesterday. This is a $3000 laptop and my first mac ever. I bought it for final cut and this is my first time purchase experience. Apple has told me to do the same thing on both machines. reinstall mac os and check system activity. nothing is fixing this issue. i think its just a bad software issue

Well, just another update. You can follow my posts since I've replied to myself each time. Feel free to click through my replies to read my experience as I've posted a lot.

I received my full brand new replacement 2019 MacBook 16" on 4/13/2020. Prior to getting my replacement, their service team reinstalled MacOS, updated my T2 drivers, replaced my Logic Board, and replaced my Touch ID board. These were all done within two service repairs but didn't fix the issue. After the two service repairs, they finally issued a brand new replacement.

Well, on Friday, 05/22/2020, I experienced the same exact issue with my brand new replacement MacBook. The whole system froze. The mouse cursor wouldn't even move. The system freeze lasted around 10 seconds. Then the fans started running at 100%. The MacBook then shut off unexpectedly. I have to press the power button to turn it back on. These are identical symptoms that I experienced with my past MacBook they repaired multiple times.

When receiving my new MacBook, I didn't restore from a TimeMachine backup and I set everything up from scratch. I called Apple on Friday and they took a copy of my system logs, including a video of the issue happening that I recorded (which is horrible quality due to me rushing to hit the record button on my phone), and my kernel panic log file that was created at the time of the unexpected shut down.

Apple sent all of the data that I provided them to their engineers. They are going to review the data and call me back Wednesday. I'll give you all an update on their answer around then. I can't believe this is happening on my replacement MacBook. We'll see what happens this time.

I bought mine just a few weeks ago, and in the last few days, it's happening. I'm outside the 14 day return window. I'm considering just selling it and going back to my old 15" unit. Really disappointed, and I buy probably 2 Macs a year. Not loving this one. :(

i7, 16gb, 500gb SSD, completely standard, store-stock build. Using new/current apple keyboard and track pad (gen 1), with a Dell 24" UHD 4K monitor that works fine, and worked great on my 15" (I've had it about 3 years).

Absolutely nothing unusual, esoteric, or even cutting edge connected to it. :(

The only questionable point is a USB-C hub that plugs in the side of the computer. I guess I'll unhook that and see if it's contributory or the cause.

Hey Apple - super dedicated fan here. I'd love to swap this unit out as a first-try before moving on to something else, or killing lots of time and productivity sending the unit in for repair. To go back to my 15", I'd have to take it back from my wife for a while, and cripple her productivity on her work. :(

Having the same issues... laptop locks, fans come on full speed, and reboots back to start.

Bought in Dec 2019

panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff7fa2657f1f): "hfs_swap_HFSPlusBTInternalNode: unrecognized catalog record type (0x421A; record #31)\n"@/AppleInternal/BuildRoot/Library/Caches/com.apple.xbs/Sources/hfs/hfs-522.100.5/core/hfs_endian.c:710

Backtrace (CPU 0), Frame : Return Address

I have done the re-install, without loosing data.

I have checked "prevent from sleeping"

I have unchecked "Auto Graphics Switching"

Started cleaning up my desktop and attempting to backup photo lib, and my Windows10/VMWare file

on the 5th try to copy that over... just got the win10 over to the USB drive.

I have activity monitor running to see if I can see anything... maybe that will keep it from going to sleep?

Once I get all backed up... I might do the fresh os load...
