New 16” MBP Random Restarts and LockUps

On my new 16 inch MacBook Pro, when the machine is idle, I get about four random reboots a day. And, when the machine is in use, at least one lock up per day that requires a reboot.

I did not use migration assistant when the machine was set up, it is a fresh install. Hardware check shows no errors… Extremely frustrating.

This is always the message upon each random restart

BAD MAGIC! (flag set in iBoot panic header), no macOS panic log available

Needless to say… This is very frustrating! Anyone else had this issue?

Just an update on my progress. My prior MacBook would unexpectedly freeze for 10 seconds, then the fans would go 100% for 5 seconds, and the machine would then power off or restart. I would check the logs after this issue and get a "bad magic" kernel panic. They sent me a brand new replacement. This issue seems to be resolved with a brand new replacement. This is a hardware issue (unless you're having panics due to the most recent version of Catalina). If you're having kernel panics, bad magic issues, or unexpected shut downs/reboots, then I'd recommend to get a replacement as soon as possible. This is the only way to resolve this issue.

I spent countless hours troubleshooting the issue with Apple and sending it out for repair twice. The first repair, they only reinstalled MacOS and updated my T2 firmware. This didn't resolve it. The second repair, they replaced my Touch ID Board and Logic Board. This also didn't resolve the issue. I then requested a new replacement (since I'm still within my warranty). They approved this and were able to send me this brand new replacement. This replacement does NOT have any issues and now the issue is resolved.

Please keep in mind that Apple (US) will only send a replacement after a certain number of repair attempts (usually 2-3 attempts), if you're past the 14-day return date. So please make sure to get started on the repair process and after the second/third repair, ask for a replacement. This is the only way to resolve the issue. It was the only way for me to resolve the unexpected shutdowns and reboots with "Bad Magic" kernel panics. I have read prior that this is the only way others have fully resolved this issue. I hope you all have the same success as me!

I'm experiencing the same issue after idling. It's not consistent, but it's happened at least a half dozen times since I got the machine a few days ago. I haven't yet been able to determine when or why it occurs—and I'm not getting an error message of any kind. Just restarts and asks me to log back in.

Another very odd thing I've noticed is that after waking the 16" MBP from sleep, the screen randomly loses color saturation ... the MBP monitor turns a ghostly white and all contrast is lost. Very noticeable due to the fact that I have a dual monitor set up and the extension monitor retains its color contrast. Have to restart to reset the color on the MBP. This has happened a few times.

My 16” has started exhibiting this behavior as well, mostly at night. the last two mornings the computer had restarted, and it happened twice last night, once around 11 (I tried to watch a movie on my Apple TV that was in my library and the computer wasn’t available). After restarting it and watching my show without a problem, this morning I found it had restarted during the night,

Here’s the beginning of the report when it rebooted,

Hello Again.

Some extra lines to update you people. I almost isolated the restarts. In my case the problems is clearly related to the connected thunderbolt 3 devices (so it really seems that the T2 is acting a big role on this situation. because like I previously said on the iMacG5 the exact same configuration didn't create any problem ever).

I also confirm that every time I turn off the Mac, instead of turning off it restarts. The sequence is

1) turn off the mac

2) external drives spin down

3) external drives start again

4) the Mac restarts

5) after the login it says that the Mac has restarted because of a problem.

Same thing when I set the Mac to sleep.

Same thing if I turn on energy saver and the external monitor goes to sleep.

So, I can't turn off the Mac.

I can't set the Mac to sleep.

I can't turn off the monitor or use energy saver.

I can't switch any software's audio hardware preferences (check my previous posts about the audio issues)

I can't use any security features (they make the restarts more frequent and unpredictable) such as Touch ID, file vault, etc...

And of course... I can't work without saving every 3 seconds anything I do. :(

I hope these informations could be useful to Apple to release an update and fix this very sad and worrying situation.

I've invested an important amount of euros to buy this Mac (all top options and the 4TB ssd) because I wanted the most advanced laptop to work, but as far as I've seen there's no way to use this Mac professionally if you have external devices connected, which is ironic... you call it Mac Book "Pro" and "Pros" in most of the cases really need to use peripherals devices.

Apple, I know It's always easy to criticise from outside... And I'm completely aware of the unbelievable efforts that are required to create any product.. in this case a world top class one. Yet, it doesn't mean that the Apple users must become unaware beta testers. I've lost so many hours because of this unstable machine. I'm also over-using the monitor and the hard drives globally reducing their lifetime and consuming so much more energy every day (talking about a greener world). Why?

The fact that there's no sign from you (Apple) towards people like us while we're having serious problems on various levels is not a great thing from you to do to the people that for decades, even in your darkest moments, always believed an invested in you.

It's not a personal thing? Yes it is... because your messages at that time were "is that simple"... while you were comparing the nightmares of the PC users to the easy and fantastic world of the Macintosh. And We believed in you and built our own professional eco-system on your promises. But now.. how is it possibile that your top gamma laptop, the best ever*, could generate such deep problems to the customers?

*As for "the best", you said it... you always say that for every product that you release, every year... but I think at least a part of your users now is not really interested in "the best". "The best" IS the best.. you don't need to underline that concept. People like me spontaneously sponsored Apple for years because we knew you were the best. Because our life was really more easy thanks to your products. Like me, many of us, we would prefer to count on the fact that the people that is developing hardware and software at Apple is thinking as a user and to the user needs, instead of just producing "optionals" to be the best on paper, the first to use a specific technology or to impress the audience with "marketing" ideas just to keep the company stocks high.

It's totally understandable that a huge company like you're now, can't act like 15 years ago. And I don't think anybody even at Apple apart the very top managers, can really understand what's required to handle such a giant company. But your strength should be always the same as it was in the past. Since when apple stopped to think about its products and started to run after the other companies? Where this race to "the best" and "the first" and "the greatest" will bring you and the users? It's difficult to say and anyway I'm not in the position to judge, but at least, please, support the users that are in trouble because of your mistakes. Mistakes that are seriously affecting their life. Like mine.

I'm still anyway grateful to work on your products.

Thanks.

For the folks having the restart issue it would be useful to know what version of Mac OS in on the machine. My daughter just received a Macbook 13 and suprisingly it didn't come with Catalina installed so I upgraded to Catalina. Just wondering if the issues are seen running Catalina and whether is version related. If it was running Catalina was the latest version still exhibiting the same issue?

Jan 11, 2020 2:52 PM in response to Spidey245

If this thread is dedicated to issues related to the new MacBook Pro 16", I doubt anyone will be running anything other than Catalina. I don't believe it can run anything other than that (see this Stack Exchange thread). For me, I've been running Catalina on my iMac Pro and replacement MacBook Pro 16" (after experiencing this restart problem on my previous MacBook Pro 16") for a bit now — and haven't seen any of the random restarts / failures to wake from sleep that this thread has documented. Sounds more like this issue is unique to the new MacBook Pro 16" rather than an issue with Catalina itself.

I googled Catalina's software version and was surprised to discover how new this software is. Catalina first release (version 10.15) in Oct 2019 with 10.15.1 version late October and the most recent version 10.15.2 Dec 10, 2019. I was curious to know whether Apple may have fixed the issue with the most recent 10.15.2 release. The fact that Catalina OS is so new makes me wonder how stable the OS is and how many potential bugs it might have. My background is in electronics and my experience is most often issues are with the software or firmware and if the problem is hardware related can most often be fixed in a software workaround. I have a MacBook 16 Pro on order and will have to put it through it's paces to see if I can replicate the issue. Hopefully not.

Yes, like I wrote, the problem is clearly related to the T2 chip and the management of peripherals. I don't know if Apple is doing something about it, surely they're not supporting us, I still hope for an update but this situation is unbelievable.

They call it "pro" and they treat us like children that have bought toys. Not even the standard consumers receive this kind of treatments. When I started to read about filing a complaint in this thread, I was absolutely against it because it's ok that a problem could occur, but the the total lack of assistance e communication from Apple towards us (I bought it as a company!!) is really unacceptable and the anger is going fast. It feels like they're just ignoring and joking with us.

Having the same issue! Out of nowhere, my brand new specked-up 16” MBP will simply freeze and have to be force restarted. I often have an Adobe CC app or two open, but typically the freezes happen when I’m not even actively interacting with those apps. I’ll be opening a calendar event, checking an email, even just sending an iMessage, or the laptop will even be idle, and all of a sudden it freezes. I mainly realize it’s happened because the screen is frozen, the mouse won’t move, and there’s no haptic feedback from the trackpad. It’s been happening anywhere from 3 to 10 times over a workday. It seems to have absolutely nothing to do with performance capability, battery, anything you would normally assume.

Working in marketing, I typically have 2 separate displays via USB-C, but I’ve never had so much as a stutter from them, barely even anything bedsides an occasional premiere export that even gets the fans revving high. This is an incredibly debilitating issue for a brand new, high-priced, flagship product.
