Bought the APP recently and used them about 7-8 hours in total. Here is my current status.

Status Today:

  • Ears itchy and moist with swelling.
  • left Ear Canal Skin broken.
  • can hear Blood pumping in my left Ear.
  • Hearing generally muffled.
  • Tissue is worst where the Tips touched it.

General Facts:

  • used Sennheiser and Bose with Silicone for years, NO problems.
  • regular Apple Pods, NO problems.
  • IT Consultant and Diver with constant plastic/rubber/silicone/electronic device contact. NO problems in 20 years.
  • NO Allergies.

First Assumptions:

  • on closer inspection noticed strong chemical Stench coming from the Tips.
  • assuming chemical contamination.
  • primarily a material issue not a medical one as Silicone Allergies are extremely rare.

Seeking Confirmation:

  • called friend (Material Scientist).
  • due to smell she assumed Evaporation of (maybe) toxic compound.
  • speculated maybe Solvent or Plasticizer.
  • instructed me on doing a Smell Test for Evaporation.

Smell Test:

  • prepared four Ziploc Bags. (unused and aired-out, neutral smell).
  • detach Tips from the Pods and put each part in its own Ziploc Bag. Bags not too big and not too small.
  • let parts rest for two hours (longer is better) so whatever evaporates can accumulate in the Bags.
  • (prepared an extra fifth bag for the unused Small and Large Tips).
  • after two hours gently opened Bags one after the other and immediately but carefully Smell-Tested the Air inside. best to be in a well aired room and take generous breaks between the Tests so the nose can "recalibrate".
  • extra Test Bags with Bose/Sennheiser Tips.

Results:

  • Bag with the unused Small/Large Tips contained a shocking amount of chemical Stench!
  • very similar to Industrial Grade Solvent or and Acidic Cleaning Solution. Smell subsided quickly but still noticeable when in close proximity to nostrils.
  • Medium Tips no better, after three days of usage noticeable chemical Stench.
  • Pods themselves only very mild (but similar) chemical Stench which vanished very quickly.
  • immediately stopped using the Tips and now keep them in a Ziploc Bag.
  • Test Bags with Bose/Sennheiser FREE OF STENCH.

Conclusions:

  • there is some kind of highly toxic chemical compound evaporating from the APP Silicone Tips.
  • Tips are contaminating the Pods inside their charging case. Would explain why more sensitive users react to the whole Pod Assembly with reactions outside of the ear canal.
  • Primary Health Issues after using the APP are most likely NOT an Allergy/Infection but something similar to A CHEMICAL BURN! Ears are desperately trying to drain out out the toxic compound. Poisoned skin is drying out and dying. Infections are probably second in the chain since the skin is damaged and ready for bacterial invasion.
  • would explain the long healing process and why Antibiotics barely help.
  • GENTLY&REGULARLY CLEAN THE AFFECTED AREA WITH A Q-TIP SOAKED IN A SALINE SOLUTION TO WASH OUT THE TOXIC MOLECULES AS BEST AS POSSIBLE.
  • selling Millions of Pods with few complaints matters nothing since the reaction might only show in people sensitive to this specific compound.
  • if you lack sensitivity the compound used will STILL accumulate and might cause massive health problems long term.
  • DO NOT USE SMELLING SILICONE TIPS!
  • (checked long term APP owners. pre 2020 production batch seem to be mostly free of these issues as well as the Stench.)

What`s next:

  • Stored all the Tips airtight and leave the Pods themselves outside so they can air-out. Will do more Ziploc Smell Tests on the Pods to check on contamination.
  • IF Pods have no more noticeable chemical stench I will try third party Tips and run another Test. Results in the thread were mixed maybe due to Pod contamination.
  • Will clean affected areas with generous amounts of Saline Solution as mentioned. Two washes today already brought down Itching/Swelling considerably.
  • Will Chat with Apple Europe on Monday escalating the Issue.
  • Will contact local Labs and Universities for a proper chemical/material analysis. Essential to find out what is used in these Tips to cause such violent reactions.

I will update the post as it develops.

i believe it’s the same allergic reaction that everyone is having. To some compound, chemical, substance or whatever that the AirPods are made of. Nobody was allergic to latex until they were. Now most manufacturers have moved away from using latex in products that come in contact with skin, like gloves. Latex gloves were replaced with Nitrile which seem to be more hypoallergenic. Apple just doesn’t care but they will when it hits the media. Won’t be long. It’ll be interesting to see what their position is then.

I was not given permission to voice thoughts of this as well. And my last entry was not allowed to post.

Apple has heard my case and kindly offering reimbursement for my MD appts and device and its shipping d/t my adverse reaction.

I, too, have invested in the foam tips and felt better- but still have R ear fullness w/fluid behind the ear and intermittent ringing in both ears. I’ve cleaned the device and washed all tips. It’s just not worth it and decided to send them back.

Not worth any long term damage.

I do think others should know and be forewarned.

I just upgraded to Airpod pro last week and regret it now. I too have a severe itchiness in the ear canal and i need rub my ear. I used some anti allergy ointment at night. i love the sound quality, however this itchiness kills everything. This is just my 4th day of usage, not sure what to do. worries to see all comments in this forum. Raised a complaint in apple and waiting for response.

So, I have posted earlier in this message board. I had the powerbeat pros and developed a serious infection in and around the back of my ears (where the plastic loops held them on). Several doctor visits and rounds of antibiotics Later, Apple returned them and I went to a cheap Walmart brand pair of earbuds with ZERO issues. After a while I wanted a better sound quality And got the APPs. After just One use It created Really bad leaking in my ears which led to an ear infection that took several weeks to get over. I went to new foam ear tips for the APPs to try and resolve the issues. I thought they worked, but after several uses the ear leaking/crust/rash has come back, just not as bad. I am clueless on all this. I run a lot and will have to find an Over the ear headphone solution. Apple will likely never disclose any issues with the products.

My original post in this thread was June 11 in which I reported having the same symptoms from wearing my AirPods Pro - drainage, ear canal pain, crusting, pressure. I bought replacement tips from Comply but didn't want to try them until my ears had cleared up enough that I thought I would be giving the new tips a fair trail. Last night I felt that my ears had finally gotten to that point (approximately 6 weeks healing time). I wore my AirPods Pro for about an hour and a half, with the replacement tips installed.

This morning I woke up to find my left ear itchy and draining. My right ear isn't itchy nor draining, but it does feel warm and there is a sense of pressure from the inside.

I'm at a loss. I was very sure that it only was Apple's silicone tips, but now I'm starting to think it is the actually body of the device itself.

This is amazing - I was having ear issues for the first time in my life. Ended up with an outer ear infection requiring antibiotics. The pain was immense. After my ears cleared up, I started using the AirPods again and same thing - watery, itchy ears. Last night I tested with just one pod in for a podcast and shortly after, the same symptoms in only that ear....

I would really like to know if there are alternate tips that others find helpful. If not, I have an incredible set of AirPods that are not only useless, but harmful if worn...

I am also having this problem. Rashing, itchy ears. Doctor prescribed anti-biotic ear spray which I used for a week and it went away, then came back when I used the headphones again.

Spoke to Apple earlier today and was asked a bunch of questions in a very specific way that made it clear the advisor was reading a script - i.e. this is common and there is a process in place for these reports.

This is unacceptable and I expect compensation for the pain and suffering.

Did anyone have luck returning the AirPod Pros after months of having purchased them? I only recently started using my AirPod Pros a month to two months ago and they were given to me as a gift in February. The moment I started to use them, I noticed the exact same problems. Discharge, pain in ears. At first I didn't know what was causing this, but then I realized the AirPod Pros were the only thing I changed in that amount of time. So I gave it a little break, cleaned them, and reused them again after a couple of weeks. Again, I started to get discharge in my ears and pain with constant use. I gave them a break a second time around for about 2-3 weeks, cleaned them again and used them with the same problem. This time my ear infection got very severe and I went to an ENT, who diagnosed me with a severe external ear infection. He took a look at my ear and told me that if I had waited any longer to go and see him, I would've ended up in the ER... My ear and the left side of my face was in extreme pain for about a week. I was unable to do anything productive in that amount of time because the pain was just that bad. I was prescribed pain killers (Hydrocodone), which I took for a couple of days when the pain was unbearable. I was prescribed two different antibiotics for 10 days, one of them drops and the other one in pill form. Today is my last day of antibiotics. The pain has subsided and the infection seems to have cleared, but my hearing is a bit less in my left ear now it seems like. I'm assuming I just have to give it time for it to completely normalize.

I called Apple when my ear pain started 10 days ago to ask them if I could return the AirPod Pros and purchase the regular AirPods. Unfortunately, their return policy is 2 weeks after the date of purchase with a little bit of flexibility, so they did not allow me a refund. I'm wondering if anyone has had any luck returning their AirPod Pros past the 2 week deadline for returns. I have no use for these AirPod Pros, they have caused me a tremendous amount of pain and all I want to do is return them. Obviously nobody knew these things would cause me so much pain, this is something that had to be discovered after actually using them.

Hi Zed. From personal experience, it took me multiple months to fully recover from the multitude of issues. The ringing in the ears didn't go away until after 6 months. I persisted with APPs far too long, and I ended up with longer term consequences.

I can report positively that I don't notice any immediate issues now, after 7 months of not wearing them.

If you are experiencing any pain or suspected hearing loss, I would certainly see a doctor.

Now that two people have reported this, I may add possible hearing loss as a suspected symptom from this group when I list them again.
