Transferring everything from old Macbook to new iMac

Can I connect my old Macbook to my new iMac using cables to transfer all data? I've experimented with bootable backups and have two, but when I needed them they both failed by only transferring 50% of the data. iCloud did a better job, but I have graphics and photos that precede the cloud.

I'd like to know if Migrant Assistant will allow a total transfer of data that's not on the cloud? And, perhaps if anyone has bootable backup software experience and a recommendation.

MacBook Pro 15", OS X 10.11

Yes, but it is not wise. The most simple method is to connect the old computer's Time Machine backup to the new Mac using a USB cable, then launch Migration Assistant on the new Mac and follow the on-screen directions. This is the fastest and most reliable method. NEVER EVER EVER use Wi-Fi to attempt this as it will fail 100% of the time.

Applications - Utilities - Migration Assistant.
