Macbook pro 16 2019 freezes randomly and restarts

I just bought a new macbook pro 16 inch 2019 that came with Catalina, I set it up as a new mac and installed some apps (Chrome) and started using it.

The problem is it always freezes at some points and I have to manually restart it by pressing the power button for a few seconds until it shuts down.

This might be just me, but I think this shouldn't happen on a laptop thats costs 2699€.

I updated it to the last version of Catalina and this didn't fix the problem.

I wanted to go back to Mojave, not an option I guess.

I finally called Apple Support about this problem, having suffered the freezing and other GPU problems since the first day. After putting me on hold and checking with her supervisor, she did confirm this is a known problem with the MacBook Pro 16 Inch models. She did remote into my MacBook to verify the model and hardware configuration (specifically looking at the AMD Radeon Pro 5500M 8 GB GPU). She created an appointment at my local Apple Store and I will be given a new computer (not refurb). I did ask if Apple has identified the specific problem, and she told they have and all new models have the issue resolved.

It seems this was/is a hardware problem (not software) and replacing the computer is the only solution.

I will be replacing my Space Gray MacBook Pro 16 Inch tomorrow at the Apple Store. I hope this will resolve the problem.

I suggest others contact Apple Support and get their computer replaced.

Good Luck…

My model config is…

Space Gray

I bought a MBP 16 i9 on 31st of December, first thing it did was freeze, right after I connected a monitor. I got a replacement yesterday, I am actually afraid to do anything on this 3k machine, I got a feeling I will just return it as well within 14 days if there is no update from Apple. I never learn, I bought a new version 4times, and this is the 4th serial problem. It's ridiculous that a premium price tag company is using their users for user testing, but its our fault because we tolerate it and give them even more money. I should just go with Lenovo as I planned.

Having the same issues here on 10.15.2 .

Screen completely freezing, sound and Touch Bar working for a brief period. Then FANs rev high and complete shutdown.

Replacement machine has same issue, perhaps GPU Hardware issue? Will Apple resolve with Software patch....

I would expect Apple to have an unusually higher return rate for MBP 16-inch.

I have a lot of problems on my Macbook Pro 16 too. Catalina 10.15.2.

I have mainly three problems that are totally unacceptable for a $3000 device:

  1. The screen freezes only when I'm on battery, and the description of the other people is pretty accurate. It stops working, but the MAC actually is working fine (only the screen is frozen)
  2. For two times in two different days (I had this mac for 3 weeks) the keyboard got stuck. And when I mean "got stuck", I mean that it didn't work at all. The CAPS LOCK key was always green and any of the keys didn't work. I know that this is a Software problem because the external wired keyboard that I had was not working (but the mouse on the same USB Hub did), so hopefully it should be software related.
  3. I got a sudden reboot today, the fans went full noise while the MAC was charging and at 19% of battery.

Hopefully those errors are software problems that will be fixed very soon.

Until then, I cannot recommend anyone buying this Macbook.

Here's my setup: 16" MPB connected via TB3 cable to the CalDigit TS3+ dock. Connected to the dock is a Samsung 28" UHD monitor connected via a DP-TB cable.

My Mac seems to be as stable as can be expected under normal use, but if it goes to sleep (automatically or manually), there's a high chance that it either will wake up with only the built-in display working (dock and external monitor not recognized), or the built-in display will show a garbled mess. Either way, once in this state, the only resolution is a reboot.

I have tried running with "Automatic graphics switching" both on or off, Safe Mode, etc.. Apple tech support has tried their best to troubleshoot the issue but I am convinced that this is a graphics driver issue and hope that 10.15.3 (or sooner) will help. Either way, I just try to keep my Mac from going to sleep unless I feel like doing a reboot.

I experienced the exact same thing, and was able to return my MBP 16 to Apple for a full refund. But I still need to buy a new MacBook! I just checked in with Apple support and they informed me that they do not have any information regarding a repair program or resolution to this issue - which they said they were unaware of. Has anyone else had an improved situation with their MBP 16 following either a replacement with a new machine, or a software update?

I'm running into the same problem. The whole computer just freezes, included touch pad feedback. It happens regularly in 3D applications, Spark AR Studio specifically. I thought it may have been a problem with the graphics card so I returned the computer for a new one, but still running into random crashes.

My last freeze was this evening. I was running Maya in the background with Chrome in the foreground, with probably a dozen tabs open - that's how I prefer to work and have never run into this issue on my older macbook pro (2013).

This is really disconcerting, when the OS freezes and I have to perform a hard shutdown. I lose my work and worry that it will eventually corrupt the OS.

Are there any solutions to this? Is Apple looking into it?

My MBP could not be fixed. Many people are facing this problem. I have returned the laptop for full refund. Apple's process is pathetic, it took one week to approve refund and it will take 1+ month for the refund to be actually made! I will not recommend buying it for the following reasons:

  1. Faulty hardware
  2. Support people are clueless how to fix it..You have to prove in front of them by crashing it.
  3. No parts available in India
  4. Refund will take more than 1 month.

I had already changed the energy settings as you described:

"System Preferences > Energy Saver

And uncheck the Automatic graphics switching."

This has also brought me positive results, but only when I'm hooked up to power! When I work with the battery it still crashes when trying to "wake up"!

I'm contemplating packing this MacBook Pro up and sending it back. Can't believe Apple isn't responding to anything on this forum! I've been in contact with the support twice and their only available solution was to reinstall the OS, which I did, and it didn't change the situation what so ever!

How can Apple sell such an incredibly unstable laptop? I have tons of Apple stuff in my home & have never experienced any problems until this laptop, and the support people have no patience at all. They refuse to acknowledge the problem exists at all! How can this be Apple???

This is all very strange - especially the silence from Apple and the media about a seemingly serious and possibly widespread hardware issue. Have any of you shared your experiences with MacRumors and similar technology news sites? I was lucky to have returned my MBP 16 within the return period. I'm going to wait a few months and hope that Apple figures out what is wrong. I really want what the MBP 16 offers, but who can afford to waste all the time needed to try to prove to Apple that there's something wrong?

This past week I was at the main Apple store in New York City (the one that is open 24x7x365) and I had the opportunity to talk to two of their actual repair techs (not just the "geniuses" at the bar). Both of the techs told me that they had not received any notice of anything related to this problem with MBP 16. In fact, they claimed that they were not seeing any repair cases related to spontaneous freezes of MBP 16. How could this be?

I wonder whether this problem is related to the particular hardware configuration? My custom configuration was high-end, with the best video card, 64 GB RAM, and best CPU option. I wonder how many of you have custom configurations vs. the mass-produced standard configuration that you can buy off-the-shelf in any Apple store? It would be useful for future posts to this list to specify the actual hardware configuration that you have.

So my 2nd unit didnt have bad magic issue, but i was noticing weird CPU heating and fan behaviour, this is what happened yesterday after i updated to catalina 15.3., i was doing first any kind of load - k4 stop motion sequence, and the second video are temperatures during first render on this machine, of a 1080p youtube video. Have a look. https://youtu.be/1ta-TELWO1M

The first 16" I received (about 4 days after the model dropped) had that same issue where the 10.15.1 supplemental update would crash repeatedly and it was never resolved at the Apple Store. I wasn't accused of breaking it but everybody was sure they could resolve the problem so I was there for quite some time while different individuals tried unsuccessfully to reload the OS. They had just received their shipment of 16" units and ad the same config so I returned mine and took another after another hour in the store to be sure the update ran on it. That is the unit I have now. Since installing 10.15.3, it has panicked 8 times, yesterday 5 times in the span of 7 hours. It is currently freezing for about 60 seconds, rebooting and restarting followed by the fan spinning up. (Prior panics were freeze, fan spinning up, restarting and more fan after that.) I am not running anything processor intensive, just reading a web page or document. I have eliminated all external devices except a LG Ultrafine display and it has lasted 36 hours without crashing.

I did ask if Apple has identified the specific problem, and she told they have and all new models have the issue resolved.

Interesting and promising. But my MBP 16 is only about two weeks old. So how much newer are these models? Granted my problems are mostly limited to restart on wake from sleep (with standby on), and I don't have the random freezing YET, but the errors are still all GPU-related.

Gonna take it in anyway I guess. Just hoping it doesn't get worse on a new machine. Anyone here get theirs from Best Buy? I'm still in the return window, so wondering if I should go there to replace it instead.
