Slideshow in Photos: how to split combined images

I'm working on a slideshow in Mac Photos. When I add new photos, the randomness of how Photos combines or doesn't combine two photos/slides into one screen on the slideshow is perplexing. And I can't seem to figure out how to manually combine two individual slides into one combo or take a combo and split into two individual slides.

Any ideas on how to control this manually?

(I've read that you can't control this, but certainly there must be some way... the theme isn't applying any clear logic to this, so it's not a pattern that is baked into the theme itself)

I'm using the latest Photos on Catalina with the Vintage Photos theme. I have about 74 images at the moment.

Thanks!

The sequence of templates is fixed, as long as you do not add new photos to the slideshow. For example, for the Vintage theme, I am currently seeing the slide number 14 with two photos side-by-side. Right before I added ten new photos to the slideshow, also the slides 4 and five had two photos. I can replace the paired photos on slide 14 by dragging a different photo from a single slide to the pair. This will replace a photo from the pair by the dragged photo, but the slide will remain a placeholder for two photos. Adding new photos to the slideshow will just move the place, where the double-slide will occur. There is no way to prevent the double-slides completely.
