External Displays won't come back on

I have a new 2019 16" MBP (2.3GHz 8 core with Radeon Pro 5500) MacOS 10.15.1 with the supplemental update installed.

If I attached external displays they work fine. BUT if the computer turns off the displays (e.g. if I lock the screen or walk away for a few minutes) then when I come back and try to use the machine again, then the screens flash intermittently (across all the screens, the inbuilt display and the external monitors) and continuously. Then the MacBook's fans start spinning like a jet taking off. It's like the display driver is continually crashing.

If I unplug the external displays then the internal display comes back to life and I can use the mac again. BUT from that point on I can't plug the external monitors in again or I get the same problem. To be able to use external monitors again I have to reboot the machine.

The only workaround I've found is to set the screens to never go to sleep.

This is VERY frustrating!

Any ideas?

Please see my earlier response. The new 16 inch Macbook requires more power than the LG display can supply. I solved this by keeping the 96 Watt power adapter that comes with the Macbook plugged in along with the USB-C cable from the LG 5K display. I have not had a single problem since.

I tried resetting PRAM and SMC multiple times (lol yes i did the multiple cycles as is suggested earlier in this thread) when I was on 10.15.3 and the issue still showed up if I didn't disable the sleep setting.

Very much doubt it'll change anything doing it again in 10.15.4. The kernel panics really seem to indicate this is a driver issue Apple or its GPU vendor need to address.

I am super glad I didn’t update.

I am running 10.15.1 after having my machine’s motherboard replaced.

It’s still a bit buggy. After several weeks with it back home, the color profile either goes milky or heavily contrasted after the screen goes to sleep. I’ve turned that function completely off in Energy Saver and Displays. Now, it’s just the screensaver that turns on after 30 mins of idle.

Ive noticed the temp and CPU loaf jump from 1.3/1831 - 4/4800 but it hasn’t kicked on the fans or anything.

Turbo Boost and the temp of the machine still goes bananas when using a screen record software and photoshop. It isn’t as obnoxious as it was before when I felt like the MBP was about to take off for a Mission to Mars and/or join the other AÍ from HER.

These machines get a little silly when the battery power falls below 50% and you’re running GPU intensive operations including using an external monitor.

My advice: Make sure you’re using the correct power adapter and cable from Apple, trade out the motherboard if you’re experiencing serious issues, stick to 10.15.1 until another brave Apple monk eats the OS and doesn’t die. It’s how the Taoist discovered their secrets. Can’t hurt us in this situation. Just our computers. (I hope Skynet isn’t still monitoring my online activity)

Good luck everyone!
