External Displays won't come back on

I have a new 2019 16" MBP (2.3GHz 8 core with Radeon Pro 5500) MacOS 10.15.1 with the supplemental update installed.

If I attached external displays they work fine. BUT if the computer turns off the displays (e.g. if I lock the screen or walk away for a few minutes) then when I come back and try to use the machine again, then the screens flash intermittently (across all the screens, the inbuilt display and the external monitors) and continuously. Then the MacBook's fans start spinning like a jet taking off. It's like the display driver is continually crashing.

If I unplug the external displays then the internal display comes back to life and I can use the mac again. BUT from that point on I can't plug the external monitors in again or I get the same problem. To be able to use external monitors again I have to reboot the machine.

The only workaround I've found is to set the screens to never go to sleep.

This is VERY frustrating!

Any ideas?

Please see my earlier response. The new 16 inch Macbook requires more power than the LG display can supply. I solved this by keeping the 96 Watt power adapter that comes with the Macbook plugged in along with the USB-C cable from the LG 5K display. I have not had a single problem since.

Tried this solution and if anything the monitor has got worse with the power cord plugged in, this has been going on now for 4 months. Do we know if it just the 4K 5K LG monitors which are the problem with these MacBook Pro 16? Get a little fed up dealing with this problem, I would not mind so mush if there was a solution, but there is no fix as far as I can see, apart from buying a new Monitor, or get a new laptop which is not a Macbook?

No changes after update for me. I have my MacBook closed on a stand, and use external apple keyboard and mouse. This does not work, since the computer has shut off. Even if i disconnect the screen and open the MacBook, it takes some time before it restarts, and the Apple-logo shows.

I figured out that the fan spins rapidly and the computer shuts down after about 10-15 minutes in sleep-mode.

Reseting NVM-RAM and SMC did not help.

Having the exact same problem. Brand new 16" - i9 2.3ghz, with a Dell U3417W.

Allowing the computer to fall asleep with the external display connected results in a hard crash.

Possibly related (?) - and curious if others see this too - when plugging in the monitor, after everything switches over and the monitor comes on there's a brief blue flash a few moments after. It's brief, doesn't impact anything, but it always happens - also happens whenever the switchover takes place (closing the lid will trigger it, so will opening it)

I also had a crash once while randomly plugging the monitor into different usb-c ports to see if the blue flash was only occuring in specific ports. It's not, it's in all of them, and trying to figure that out gave me a hard crash. Can't reproduce that easily though.

I agree, it sounds like it's a design problem. When I was running a heavy work in my editing software maxing out the CPU/GPU, even the battery started dropping (although it was plugged in all the time). And it crashed, obvioulsy.

My gut feeling is that this MBP16 is not really intended to be used with external screen and computer tucked away somewhere as if it was a desktop. It's a laptop first and foremost, with the potential to be hooked up to a monitor every once in a while.
