macOS to Ricoh Aficio 5002 MP Printer - Print Data Error

Hello all,

I searched around but answers I could find were either relevant to much older versions of macOS or seemingly irrelevant to this specific issue.

In my office we have a Ricoh Aficio 5002 MP printer that seems to work perfectly with both Windows (10, 7), Linux (Ubuntu 19.10, Deepin 15.11), and even Android, yet doesn't work at all with Mac (or iOS) devices. At first I thought it could be that the printer doesn't support postscript but as far as I'm aware Linux uses postscript by default and it has had literally no problem. I checked the printer configuration and, at least on the UI side, they are written the same so I have no idea where the problem is coming from. The /etc/cups/printers.conf between my Deepin Linux and Mac computers also looks the same.

I've tried pretty much all configurations the printer tool will allow including using Ricoh's official drivers (2.0 and 3.0) to no avail, so I'm wondering if there's anything deeper in the macOS system that would make it work?

If it would help, is there any common configuration files between CUPS on Linux and Mac that I should check out? Any help is appreciated, because until I get my Macbook working with this printer I'm stuck using a PC for work! :(

That Ricoh Afio MP 5002 printer is supported by Apple's AirPrint for wired/wireless printing. Reset the Print system, and when you get to the Add Printer panel, select AirPrint instead of any explicit Ricoh drivers. Add the Printer, and test print.

Hi susudo,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities! I see you're having an issue with connecting a printer to your Mac, and I'd like to help out.

It sounds like you've checked for Printer and scanner drivers for Mac, and have been unsuccessful connecting your printer to your Mac.

However, it looks like your printer model, RICOH Aficio MP 5002, is compatible with AirPrint, as shown here: About AirPrint

More info can be found here: Use AirPrint on your Mac

Contact your printer manufacturer if you need additional info about your printer.

Take care!
