No beep beep notification of incoming call while already on call.

I have an iphone 11 pro max. While i am on a whatsapp call with someone, or a regular carrier call with someone, and i receive an incoming call over my carrier, the iphone does not make the call waiting beep beep to alert me on my AirPods that i have a call waiting. The screen does show the incoming call but there is no audible notification sometimes.

the phone is not on dnd and the ringer is not on silent. What am i missing?

So i ended up reaching out to whatsapp support and they confirmed that it is a feature of whatsapp for the iphone that all call waiting audio notifications are, by default, silenced during an ongoing whatsapp call. I switched to skype for my calls. The issue still stands in whatsapp. So maybe apple can resolve this matter with them so users are able to continue to use whatsapp. But for now, skype is the only solution if one does not want to miss any calls.

thanks for the help everyone.

Hello rasas217,

Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you're having trouble with not hearing a call waiting sound when using your AirPods. I'd be happy to provide information that may help.

You mentioned that this is only happening sometimes. Check to see if this is happening with a particular contact or in particular location.

You may also want to restart your iPhone: Restart your iPhone

Another step to take is to reset your AirPods: Reset your AirPods.

If you're still experiencing this, please reply with whether or not this ever happens when you're not connected to your AirPods.

Take care.

Hello rasas217,

Thank you for your reply and for those additional details. Let's keep working on this.

Take a look at the information in this article, and temporarily disable "Attention Aware" on your iPhone: About Attention Aware features on your iPhone X or iPad Pro. Then, test the issue.

When your AirPods are not connected, are you able to hear the incoming call as expected?

Take care.

Hello,

thank you for reaching out to me. I have restarted my iphone and also reset my airpods. The problem still persists.

I use whatsapp calling frequently. Now, the phone simply never rings for any regular incoming call. The screen displays the accet decline option but still no audible notification in my headphones.

i have a feeling that this has to do with notification settings of whatsapp and iphone calls. But i cant seem to figure out the perfect combination. Pls help.

That notification is a carrier feature. Contact your carrier.

Initially I thought that it may be the attention aware feature and i tested it. The phone still does not make the call waiting beep during ongoing whatsapp call.

when my airpods are not connected the phone lights up next to my ear but does not make the call waiting beep in the earpiece.

i am running 13.3. If someone has the 11 pro max and they use whatsapp, maybe it can be tested if other users also face this issue. I have seen multiple threads of people complaining about the same issue but there seems to be no solution.

Its not a carrier issue. i switched from a samsung. It always gave the call waiting beep in the airpods or without the airpods. Even this phone did it a few times when i first got it. But i started missing calls and realized its not beeping during ongoing whatsapp calls.

I restarted the phone and tested it. I had my mum call me (over my carrier) while i was on an ongoing whatsapp call. The phone beeped. Then an hour later i tested again (same way). Didn’t work. I cant restart my phone after every call just so this basic call notification works.

i hope its not a bug. Bc that means there is no solution unless apple fixes it at the software level.

I took your advice IdrisSeabright. I called my carrier and asked them about call waiting and the call waiting alert. They said that call waiting alert is managed by the device and they manage the call waiting setting itself for my phone number. They turned it off and back on from their end.

I just tested it. It didnt help. So now we can officially rule out the fact that it may be a carrier issue.

Apple can’t do anything about a 3rd party app, and has little incentive to. WhatsApp is a Facebook product; they are the only ones who can fix it. Microsoft’s Skype is a good product, but is not as secure as WhatsApp as it does not use end-to-end encryption. But if you aren’t concerned about the FBI and NSA having access to your communications there’s no reason not to use Skype. It has a lot of features that WhatsApp lacks, including the ability to call phone numbers anywhere in the world at very good rates (mobile or landline) and to add a phone number that someone can call you at.

No beep beep notification of incoming call while already on call.
