New Macbook Pro 16 inch Overheating

Hi, I bought the 16-inch New Macbook Pro yesterday, and was surprised to find that the temperature skyrocketed to over 70 celsius degree when installing my packages in terminal. I measured the temperature using a third-party app, the fan was running all the time, but the CPU load was only 20-30%, so I had no idea what was wrong.

The technical consultant in my university said it was probably due to my overcharging habit. I usually connect my laptop to the power when I'm working, but I don't think it's the problem, b/c my previous Macbook Pro (13-inch, 2017) seemed to function pretty well (except when I'm running expensive algorithms, which is why I upgraded to this new one).

Anyway so I continued using the New Macbook Pro this morning, but the temperature was abnormally high (over 50 celsius degree) even when I was just trying to open a Jupyter notebook... Is there anything I should check to find out why it is overheating?

I had the same issue. It started overheating when I was migrating my data from older Macbook to the new 16 inch Pro. I attempted to reinstall macOS Catalina the issue continued. Then I decided to delete all data from both HD Drive and HD Drive Data in recovery mode. I reinstalled macOS Catalina. Since then my Macbook Pro 16 inch has been woking like a charm. 2 days of full use did not hear the fans turn on. My guess the issue might be in migration assistant app.

Hope this helps.

apple has a big problem with this laptop model, I have a 16-inch macbook pro 2019 8 core i9,
I have the same problem, the laptop gets too hot, the battery drains in less than 2 hours.
I see that we all have the same problem and apple does not say anything. Apple is working with
low quality of its products, I believe that all this is due to the thermal paste that processors
have and the quality of materials they use to manufacture their devices lately.

Just reading this now - but I had the exact same issues from the start after purchasing 16 in in late November. Worked with Apple support and then in spring they had me take it to Apple place in AZ - MacMedia who basically restored to factory settings. But it started doing the same. Then in later spring I mailed it in to Apple where they replaced the motherboard? Didn't help.. Temperatures this summer were up to 118.6 - I took pics while holding a temperature sensor on the case. The keyboard just gets too hot to use.- or the the upper two rows and the Touch Bar. The 188 temperature is of the metal band of the case between the Touch Bar and the screen itself. Anyway p this time they replaced the case and battery. No improvement - well actually I haven't recorded 118 yet - but 113 and it is still too hot to use at that point. I agree they should admit there is a problem... First time ever I have had issues with multiple Apple computers - starting with the 11GS... and 3 watches and many many iPhones. 📲. I will keep on doing research...

JustDealWithIt and previous posters... I purchased a Mac16 inch in October/November of 2019 and ended up having similar issues that you have shared. I am NOT very knowledgeable with hardware but the reality was the laptop became so heated that it was almost a safety concern because of possible burns to my legs. Apple Support tried to help - Multiple techs had me do different things - had me take it to a repair center, sent it in and major components were replaced, but the issue continued. I included pictures of a temperature sensor that displayed the current temp on the outside of the computer... as you shared - or someone else shared, the keyboard - particularly the upper two rows became too hot to use. They finally replaced it this last fall. It is still a 16 inch Mac but it has not had the heating up issues that my original had. I know this is not an answer to your situation - just sharing my experience.

So far the replacement MacBook Pro has not had the same heating issues that my original did. I am a longtime Apple product user, but for the first time ever I did not purchase the Apple supplemental warranty* - so to be honest I was more diligent about communicating and paying attention to what was happening. I just kept calling, and communicating.

** I didn't add on the warranty at purchase - thought I would add it later and then just forgot. I won't do that again...

Same here. First apple product I am not happy with either. Sent it in and also noticed high usage of RAM along with this heating issue. Even after sending the product in apple care and support "could not replicate the issue" they know this model has issues, so many are complaining about the heat issue. Be aware potential buyers not all apple products live to the expectations. The product is only 1.5 months old. This will be the last apple PC product I buy ever.

I have usually 3-4 browsers opened, about 5-10 tabs on each, wordpress websites, forums, facebook manager, no videos playing.

I use one 4k monitor. I ll try editing first time today, i finally got some 4k footage, i hope i dont start a fire lol.

I have External GPU turned on constantly (graphic card switching turned off) because of another issue i had, i got my first unit replaced after 1 day - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/250826263

Actually i dont mind the noise that much, it can be annoying when doing a screencast, but my main concern is malfunction, its a work station, i need it to work besides its no pocket change computer.

Same issue, they couldn't replicate it. I had the same specs but not within the return policy only about a month and half in and this machine has crapped out. Really disappointed. Not sure how we can escalate this that WE ARE NOT LYING! I feel if everyone can post on this thread and get their attention just maybe they will do something about it. I will be reporting and filing a complaint on BBB, but as consumers we shouldn't have to spend 3-4K on something and be scammed by APPLE and their shenanigans. If nothing happens might consider to file a class action lawsuit on apple for ignoring this and not being transparent with their consumers about this 16 inch MBP heating issue :).

Does anyone know a way to tweak the power settings for the discrete graphics card (dGPU)? I reluctantly accept the fact that I can't switch it off when using an external monitor, but would it be possible to tune it down a little? For what I do, the integrated graphics would suffice easily. So if there is a way to reduce the speed and power consumption of the dGPU, that would help a little.

I see links where such tweaks for the CPU are described, for instance by switching off turbo boost. If something similar is possible with the dGPU I would like to know more about that.

Thanks!

Same problem. I noticed the heating issue on the first day I used and took it back to the Apple store for a replacement. The second one has the same problem. Unfortunately I waited beyond the two weeks, and cannot get it replaced. The device is almost always hot even when not in use. I took to repair and they said the logic board was defective and replaced it. No change. I've gone back and forth three times and they tell me there is nothing wrong. It has other problems also, like the display often gets dim (like cloudy), and the colour is definitely not vibrant, it is practically the same as my late 2013 MBP. A few times it restarted itself "due to an error" when it was iddle. I can't believe I paid this much money for a lemon and Apple won't do anything about it. I've been switched from advisor to advisor with no help in sight. I've given up talking to them and resigned to the idea that in a couple of years I will have to get another laptop...for sure it won't be an Apple.

I operate mine every day with two additional screens and the computer running open at full brightness and I have never had an issue. I do this while running Parallels so that I can run my VPN, which is only compatible with Windows. To me this would indicate that it is not design. I have the base model i9 version, so maybe it is the upgraded i9?
