New Macbook Pro 16 inch Overheating

Hi, I bought the 16-inch New Macbook Pro yesterday, and was surprised to find that the temperature skyrocketed to over 70 celsius degree when installing my packages in terminal. I measured the temperature using a third-party app, the fan was running all the time, but the CPU load was only 20-30%, so I had no idea what was wrong.

The technical consultant in my university said it was probably due to my overcharging habit. I usually connect my laptop to the power when I'm working, but I don't think it's the problem, b/c my previous Macbook Pro (13-inch, 2017) seemed to function pretty well (except when I'm running expensive algorithms, which is why I upgraded to this new one).

Anyway so I continued using the New Macbook Pro this morning, but the temperature was abnormally high (over 50 celsius degree) even when I was just trying to open a Jupyter notebook... Is there anything I should check to find out why it is overheating?

Same issue, they couldn't replicate it. I had the same specs but not within the return policy only about a month and half in and this machine has crapped out. Really disappointed. Not sure how we can escalate this that WE ARE NOT LYING! I feel if everyone can post on this thread and get their attention just maybe they will do something about it. I will be reporting and filing a complaint on BBB, but as consumers we shouldn't have to spend 3-4K on something and be scammed by APPLE and their shenanigans. If nothing happens might consider to file a class action lawsuit on apple for ignoring this and not being transparent with their consumers about this 16 inch MBP heating issue :).

Same problem. I noticed the heating issue on the first day I used and took it back to the Apple store for a replacement. The second one has the same problem. Unfortunately I waited beyond the two weeks, and cannot get it replaced. The device is almost always hot even when not in use. I took to repair and they said the logic board was defective and replaced it. No change. I've gone back and forth three times and they tell me there is nothing wrong. It has other problems also, like the display often gets dim (like cloudy), and the colour is definitely not vibrant, it is practically the same as my late 2013 MBP. A few times it restarted itself "due to an error" when it was iddle. I can't believe I paid this much money for a lemon and Apple won't do anything about it. I've been switched from advisor to advisor with no help in sight. I've given up talking to them and resigned to the idea that in a couple of years I will have to get another laptop...for sure it won't be an Apple.

I purchased two (2) new MacBook Pro 16 inch. I immediately noticed the overheating problem. None of all my previous Apple products had anything like this before. I am a MacBook user since 2007. Thinking about changing now. The overheating problem is present on both the machines I purchased. The problem is exacerbated when transferring large amount of data via Network. I have not had time to dig deep enough on this problem yet, but I am afraid this is a serious Thermal Design issue of the machine. I mitigate the problem by physically connecting the machine to a passive thermal sink. Unless an easy software workaround can be found, a product Recall might be needed here.

I operate mine every day with two additional screens and the computer running open at full brightness and I have never had an issue. I do this while running Parallels so that I can run my VPN, which is only compatible with Windows. To me this would indicate that it is not design. I have the base model i9 version, so maybe it is the upgraded i9?

Curious, when you mean over heating, are you saying thermal throttling or the fans are running at full? And do you keep the laptop open, or do you keep it closed when you connect to the external monitor?

I know that these computers did have some issues right after release about the fans running on full when they did not need to. This was fixed with the last version of MacOS I think.

I don’t mean thermal throttling. The fans run at full sometimes, when the device feels extremely hot to the touch for no reason, CPU usage low not indicating a specific app issue. I am traveling and just noticed that without the second display the heating is reduced, so I think the problem may be the second display. Apple advertises that a second display can be used, so it should not be happening.

Hi - I bought my MacBook Pro 16" in late Feb. I contacted the sales representative before my returns period was up because I was worried about the fans, but they didn't get back to me, and we were in lockdown so I couldn't take it into a shop.

On 10th July the fan was going crazy while I was working on a video project. Then suddenly it turned itself off. Basically the logic board overheated beyond repair. All the videos I was working on that day are stuck on the SSD and because the SSD is embedded with the logic board, the whole thing will need replaced and I only have access to my data if I spend £900 - £4200 on Ontrack's data recovery (as Apple don't deal with data recovery).

I just wanted to post cause it really worries me how many people this might happen to - I worry especially for anyone who's trusting in their 8TB hard drives. I trusted the internal hard drive (2TB) and had offloaded all my camera footage. I would've done a backup that night but never got the opportunity.

If you're experiencing overheating - don't rely on your internal hard drive!

it's not normal to have 60 degrees C at "idle". That temperature 60 C is like the holding temperature for soup warmer machine and it's too hot for that aluminum body of macbook. i have the same issue, i have the old macbook 13" and never reached this temperature; when i bought new macbook 16" it's shocking after around 15 minutes only of using the Adobe photoshop software and lightroom the temperature skyrocketed! so please someone from apple expert tech team to explain why is this happening? yes, it's faster now compared to my old mac 13" but it shouldn't be like this by just using simple lightroom and photoshop software, i am not even using that adobe premiere pro video software.

I don't want to defend Apple because this laptop is over powered/under cooled but 30C ambient is rather hot for any high performance machine. If I tried to work in this temp I would sweat so much the lap would get water damage :D I got i7, 32G and I am running multiple VMs including EVEng which in turn simulates routed networks. It works well. I also use eGPU because discrete GPU was creating too much heat. Over time that heat probably will damage the mobo. Also I have TimeMachine connected all the time, because when the mobo will die, data recovery from built-in storage will be very expensive.

I also use Macs Fan Control app which brings funs up way sooner so the laptop has better cooling. The firmware is optimized for the noise. Unfortunately they care about marketing too much.

30s is hot for macbook pro 16" machine, actually. An Alienware, where I'm coming from, it's taking it just fine. And you must be aware that the world temperature is increasing, lol, in a world of mobility. What I'm saying is there's no mitigation measures in place for a 5k machine. At least, offer an effective cooling pad as a solution to fix the overheating issues with macbook pro 16".

Also I didn't mention that till the last os patch it was crashing and rebooting after it went in sleep mode from a cooking session. :)

It all depends how you use your machine. I wouldn't feel fine to recommend a macbook pro for heavy software development. It got to be a desktop.

I too just purchased a 2019 MacBook Pro 16" with 32GB, 8-core i9, with the AMD 5500M GPU. As soon as I plugged in a second monitor via the Apple USB-C to HDMI dongle the system started overheating. Unplugging the external monitor calmed everything down. Thank you for all the tips on this string. Now, Apple really needs to do something about this besides telling us to get an ARM-based MBP. I would really like to use a second monitor with my 2019 MBP 16" but that doesn't look possible.

apple has a big problem with this laptop model, I have a 16-inch macbook pro 2019 8 core i9,
I have the same problem, the laptop gets too hot, the battery drains in less than 2 hours.
I see that we all have the same problem and apple does not say anything. Apple is working with
low quality of its products, I believe that all this is due to the thermal paste that processors
have and the quality of materials they use to manufacture their devices lately.

I have the same MBP and same problem right from the beginning. When I took it to be checked they said the logic board was defective and replaced it. I still cannot use a second display because it overheats immediately, even with just with one or two basic apps like mail or notes. It also causes the screen colours to be all washed out, menu et al. Without the second display it’s OK. By the way, an old 2013 MBP with the same apps handles the same second display with no issues. I really need to work with the second display, but after paying so much for this lemon I cannot afford to buy another laptop.

So thanks a lot Apple! I wonder when you will stop caring only for your billions of dollars and start thinking of your customers. Please do something!

I was having the same issue with Macbook Pro 16 over heating , i was on numerous calls with Support nothing helped . They removed almost all of the 3rd party apps Except Microsoft Apps . But my issue still the same .

Then looked into Activity monitor i see One Drive is consuming a lot of CPU %. I went ahead and force quite the One Drive process . at the point my Macbook temperature came down to 47 Centigrade degree from 95 degree Centigrade.

I see this issue is can happen in multiple way's . i hope this hepls.

Just reading this now - but I had the exact same issues from the start after purchasing 16 in in late November. Worked with Apple support and then in spring they had me take it to Apple place in AZ - MacMedia who basically restored to factory settings. But it started doing the same. Then in later spring I mailed it in to Apple where they replaced the motherboard? Didn't help.. Temperatures this summer were up to 118.6 - I took pics while holding a temperature sensor on the case. The keyboard just gets too hot to use.- or the the upper two rows and the Touch Bar. The 188 temperature is of the metal band of the case between the Touch Bar and the screen itself. Anyway p this time they replaced the case and battery. No improvement - well actually I haven't recorded 118 yet - but 113 and it is still too hot to use at that point. I agree they should admit there is a problem... First time ever I have had issues with multiple Apple computers - starting with the 11GS... and 3 watches and many many iPhones. 📲. I will keep on doing research...
