New Macbook Pro 16 inch Overheating

Hi, I bought the 16-inch New Macbook Pro yesterday, and was surprised to find that the temperature skyrocketed to over 70 celsius degree when installing my packages in terminal. I measured the temperature using a third-party app, the fan was running all the time, but the CPU load was only 20-30%, so I had no idea what was wrong.

The technical consultant in my university said it was probably due to my overcharging habit. I usually connect my laptop to the power when I'm working, but I don't think it's the problem, b/c my previous Macbook Pro (13-inch, 2017) seemed to function pretty well (except when I'm running expensive algorithms, which is why I upgraded to this new one).

Anyway so I continued using the New Macbook Pro this morning, but the temperature was abnormally high (over 50 celsius degree) even when I was just trying to open a Jupyter notebook... Is there anything I should check to find out why it is overheating?

I had the same issue. It started overheating when I was migrating my data from older Macbook to the new 16 inch Pro. I attempted to reinstall macOS Catalina the issue continued. Then I decided to delete all data from both HD Drive and HD Drive Data in recovery mode. I reinstalled macOS Catalina. Since then my Macbook Pro 16 inch has been woking like a charm. 2 days of full use did not hear the fans turn on. My guess the issue might be in migration assistant app.

Hope this helps.

30s is hot for macbook pro 16" machine, actually. An Alienware, where I'm coming from, it's taking it just fine. And you must be aware that the world temperature is increasing, lol, in a world of mobility. What I'm saying is there's no mitigation measures in place for a 5k machine. At least, offer an effective cooling pad as a solution to fix the overheating issues with macbook pro 16".

Also I didn't mention that till the last os patch it was crashing and rebooting after it went in sleep mode from a cooking session. :)

It all depends how you use your machine. I wouldn't feel fine to recommend a macbook pro for heavy software development. It got to be a desktop.

Dear Grant,

As you may have access to Apple issues portal , do a query on "MacBook heating up" and find out how many were resolved by apple support . I am sure you will get your answer.

By posting here in this forum we let others know the issue is more wider then we thought.

Well before buying any NEW APPLE PRODUCT i will strongly suggest go through the apple forum .

Thank you

I have answered User queries here since 2001. I have no access to any special portals, and no access to statistics about what Apple has solved and how they have solved it.

Did YOU read the forums before you bought your computer? Why would you expect anyone else to?

These forums are a lightning rod for Users with problems. Apple sold 20 million Macs last year. That's 400,000 a week, or more than 57,000 a DAY. The number of users reporting problems here is still very small.

My apologies, i thought you are working with apple and have some sort of solution to the problem . I was directing my issues to Apple , so you may ignore .

If i buy close to $4000.00 worth of machine then the problem to me is not SMALL , how can someone work on a laptop when it get hot in 10 seconds from 41C to 95-100C .

Well i did not read the forum and Ended up buying the the product , which is my mistake . That is my suggestion to the folks .. they wana take it or not its on them .

There is no point keep on talking here ....if the issue here is not addressed by APPLE

PS: BUY an AC folks and use specifically for your MacBook Pro to cool it down..

I recently purchased my first MacBook, a pro 16. I’ve been using Apple products for the last 10 years, just not a MacBook yet. So I thought I‘d move from windows to Mac and was highly disappointed with the heating up issue. My laptop would heat up quickly I’m about 10 mins. So hot that it was uncomfortable to type on it. I called Apple a couple of times to figure the issue out and resolve it. But I didn’t get the required resolution. However I got a a rather lame suggestion to exchange the laptop and purchase an Apple care+! So I just returned the laptop. I wasn’t expecting Apple to perform so badly at such a trivial requirement of not heating up. I have a $600 Acer that I use to connect for my work for the last 7 years. Even today it doesn’t heat up. It quite disheartening to see such issues with an Apple product and even more disappointing to experience the Apple customer care suggesting a mere exchange of the product and buy an Apple care for such issues!

"Not heating up" isn't a design parameter for any laptop I know of.

Certainly I've used PC laptops that heat even faster, most recently an HP Spectre x360, which heats quickly and spins the fans up to maximum just setting Windows 10 settings.

You state the heat is a result of the machine performing "badly," but that's not the case at all. It may not have been your expectation, but the machine itself worked as designed unless it shut itself down due to the heat.

In response to William Kucharski: I don't know why my 16 inch MacBook Pro is heating up - I agree that most laptops do heat up - to a degree. Mine - after even Apple fixes, parts replacements continues to heat up within minutes often to a point that I cannot use the keyboard - or at least the upper two rows as they are too hot to touch. I have to put it on a small metal open portable shelf because it is too hot to ever 'put on my lap.' I don't believe this is how Apple designed it to work.

I wish I came to this thread before I purchased my MBP. After spending this much amount in a Mac book, this heating issue just makes me sad. My temperatures when laptop is idle are 65c if connected to a monitor. And I can't just disconnect the monitor because of this issue and clamshell mode is out of question because people buy 16 inch mainly for the big display and not to keep it aside, that's just ridiculous.

After spending quite a lot on the 16” last December, I had to work without a second monitor this entire year while working from home during this epidemic...

I was hoping for a software update to fix this issue but it looks like that is not going to happen now that they have released their latest Apple silicone chip Macs with Intel in the backseat...

I hope they offer something for us MBP 16” owners to be able to overcome this thermal issue and actually be able to use a second display with the laptop as it was originally advertised to be able to do without any problem since it has a “bigger thermal system with bigger fans”...

Looks like reaching out to apple for a fix did not help for those who swapped their boards so Apple really needs to ideally provide the owners with a better solution after they put some thought into it...
