I have a MacBook Pro (early 2015) and a HP Envy 27s 4K monitor. At first I got a resolution of 3840 x 2160 but suddenly it dropped to 2560x1440. I have changed the HDMI cables but I can't get it back to 4K resolution. What can cause this problem?

You did a great job trying out another cable to rule that out as a cause. Did you make any changes to your MacBook Pro since noticing this change in resolution on your external monitor? Did you update to macOS Catalina? If so, check to see if you can find other resolution options by pressing and holding the Option key while you click on Scaled in Display preferences. This is discussed under the section titled, 'Set the resolution for a connected display' in this support article: Change your Mac display’s resolution - Apple Support.
