HEADERS for APA style keeping the same title on every page

I need to complete a research paper in APA style and I tried to set the parameters in my pages format. The problem I am having is I need to have different header titles for different pages. I tried to type in a new title on page 2, but it changes all the other page header titles to the most recent one I type. It doesn't matter which page I type the new header title on, my document setting changes all page headers to what I type. I can't find where to edit and change header titles. I've tried the header settings where it says match to previous section or create new section. It doesn't matter which I choose. It also does this to the page number. I keeps adding the number 1 to all pages. When I try to change it, it just keeps all the pages to the new number I type in. AAARRRGHH.

Hi 'foodie,

You have two separate issues here:

  1. You want a 'running header' showing the same 'title 'information on all pages of each topic, and want to different text for each topic.
  2. You want the pages numbered consecutively through the whole document.

To change the running header text, you will need to create a section to hold each set of pages. An easy way to do this is to insert a section break at the end of the last page of each section of your paper.

Each section is to have different text in the header, so each section (after the first) must be set to NOT match the previous section by unchecking the "Match previous section" checkbox.

The text is to be the same for every page in a section, so click on the header box on any page in a section and type the required header text into that box.

You want page to be numbered consecutively, so you cannot simply enter the page number into a header box or footer box. Entered directly, the digit is treated as 'fixed text', and repeated on each page in the document or each page in the section.

To get page numbers that change with each page, you need to use a function that does the calculation and displays the result.

Click on the header or footer box in which you want to display the page number, then go to the Insert menu and choose Page Number,

Because your document has many sections, and you have chosen to NOT match previous section (to enable different text in the headers of each section), you may need to Insert > Page Number once in the header or footer for each section.

For each section, set Page Numbers to Continue from previous section.

For section 2 and later sections, your settings should resemble these:

Barry
