Numbers blocked but still getting through

I have iPhone 8plus with ios 13.3. This happened with previous IOS too.

When a caller calls and its an unwanted number I tap on the little i next to the called number and scroll down to Block this caller. However I am still getting the numbers I have blocked come through. I see today a number I have blocked has called twice today and as I didn't answer they appear as a missed call.

What exactly have I done wrong or have I misunderstood the feature somehow ?

When I Google how to block callers this is the exact procedure I'm, supposed to do

Well, none of the users in this user-to-user technical support forum wanted to answer, or, as you posted in the middle of the night, there wasn’t anyone who could answer awake at the time and your posted scrolled off the first page before anyone woke up. If it had gone unanswered for 24 hours an Apple Community Specialist would have responded with a link to any relevant Apple Knowledge Base articles. So here is your answer:

You can’t block a caller from a phone (any phone). If you set a block on a number on the phone the call goes to voicemail. The only way to completely block a call is before it leaves the carrier’s network enroute to your phone. Most carriers offer a blocking service (Usually for a monthly charge) that actually stops calls. And for spam and scam calls most carriers offer apps that allow you to report and block such calls.

Thank you - but being from Australia I had posted it during my early evening yesterday sorry I assume my overnight is day time US.

My issue is that it's still physically ringing. Its not going to Voicemail immediately , its showing as missed called and I can now see that its ringing on the handset too - I heard my phone early this morning ringing and showing the blocked number. So the answers I have found to date are not indicative of what is supposed to happen which is why I thus came here. I assumed this forum was perused by Apple Technical staff as well. Also I have asked this question in other technical and iphone forums globally and no one ever answers so you can appreciate by now my frustration at the issue.

I appreciate your answer Lawrence thank you....sadly in Australia the carrier feature of blocking @ network level is not available to us.
