Sticky Notes shortcut Cmmnd Shift Y not working in Catalina

Before upgrading to Catalina, I could make a quick sticky note by selecting a text and pressing Command + Shift + Y. This does not work anymore. I also use the Paste Utility, but I find no conflicting shortcuts. Anybody has similar experiences? Gr. Erik

Hello,

Thanks for the advise!

I know that the shortcut is not well documented, but you can check it in:

Apple Menu ==> System Preferences ==> Keyboard ==> Shortcuts ==> Select "Services" ==> Scroll down and you find the entry "Make New Sticky Note". The default value is "Shift-Command-Y", but you can enter a different value by double-clicking.

I am living in the Dutch speaking part of Belgium, so I use the Belgian layout. I don't think this makes any difference.

While still using Mojave, I used this shortcut several a week. I use two Mac's, an iMac and a MacBook Pro.

The shortcut works on none of both systems ...

Mystery ...

Greetings,

Erik

Hey Erik,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you may have had a shortcut set up for quickly creating a new sticky note in Stickies that no longer works after upgrading to macOS Catalina. I have a desktop dedicated to dozens of stickies that help keep me organized. I can relate to wanting to ensure that it works correctly!

I wasn’t familiar with the shortcut, so I cross-referenced the shortcut you were using with the keyboard shortcuts outlined here:

Mac keyboard shortcuts

I’m not seeing the Shift-Command-Y option here, so is it possible that you created your own shortcut? This article outlines that process:

Create keyboard shortcuts for apps on Mac

When you follow the guidance here, do you see the shortcut in System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts? If not, what happens if you try to add it?

If you see it there, it’s possible that it may be conflicting with another shortcut:

If a keyboard shortcut doesn’t work on Mac

Keep in mind that Apple lists their shortcuts as “Shift-Command-Y” instead of “Command+Shift+Y”. This may impact your search.

Hopefully these articles help you resolve the shortcut issue. Being able to quickly open a sticky note with a keyboard shortcut seems like it may be incredibly convenient.

Take Care!

Oh dear, a mystery indeed, and one more reason for me to be wary of upgrading to Catalina just yet! :( Thanks for the very useful tip about PhraseExpress...I´m going to look into this when I have the time! In the meantime it might be a good idea to send Apple feedback about this:

Apple won´t reply, but do take note of complaints and suggestions. Best wishes for a happy 2020! Ian.

Hi Erik! You are quite right (I think!) about your Belgian keyboard not making any difference. I live in Germany and use a German keyboard, and Shift-Command-Y works perfectly for making a new Sticky note...incredibly useful! But I'm still running Mojave (10.14.6). Just double-check your keyboard shortcuts in System Preferences...something else might have "hijacked" Shift-Command-Y during the upgrade to Catalina! It does happen. Good luck! Regards, Ian.

Hi Ian,

I did the following test.

1) I replaced the Infamous shortcut Shift-Command-Y in the System preferences by the shortcut Shift-Command-@, which I presume is not used by any application

2) I tested the new shortcut to make a new Sticky. Negative

3) I activated the snippet manager PhraseExpress (One of the best utilities developed in Germany), and I allocated Shift-Command-Y to a simple text. When the the key combination would be in conflict with a running program, PhraseExpress would give a warning message. No message was given and the text was perfectly reproduced hitting Shift-Command-Y.

4) This indicates i.m.o. that Shift-Command-Y is not "hijacked", because otherwise PhraseExpress would not reproduce it.

So the mystery still remains ...

Greetings,

Erik
