Your free one year subscription is for Apple TV +

Apple TV + is Apple Original content. It’s a channel found within the Apple TV App. The shows included in your subscription will have the tv+ logo on them - those are free.

About Apple TV+ - Apple Support

Movies that say rent or buy are from the iTunes Store and not free.

This is not like Netflix etc, where all is included in the one App. Nowhere does it state you have access to the entire iTunes catalogue. Those movies are owned and sold by the Film Producers or whoever owns the rights to them, which is not Apple.

It is true that people should educate themselves on what they are buying (or being given for 'free'). It is also true that a lot (most?) people these days just don't READ. It is also true that some people will complain about just anything.

All that said, however, when this many people are all voicing their (same/similar) opinions that Apple has mismarketed their product, don't you think it's possible that Apple is not faultless here? I like to think that I am a 'reasonable person', and do try to be savvy enough to read the small print and know what I am getting, whether I am paying for it or if it is a freebie. However, a 'reasonable person' does not have the time nor inclination in this day and age to deeply scrutinise every single line of fine print when they purchase an Apple device and are offered a 'free' service for a year. Kudos to those who do, but the average 'reasonable person' does not do this. (Perhaps someone should take Apple to court as a test case!:)

No company does well in the long term by taking an arrogant high ground with its customers and in so doing alienating them. Hopefully Apple is taking on board the feedback people are providing it, rather than steadfastly defending their (in my opinion) less than stellar execution of launching its Apple TV product in the way that you are doing for them.

Thank you again for taking the time to expand on your original answer with this further information which is very helpful. Much clearer than the marketing I might add! But I certainly have a much better understanding. The thing is when you don't know you know and it wasn't easy to figure it out until finally you replied so i think there has been a failing in how apple have postured this to the casual customer. I’m grateful for your help and will hopefully now get some use from it.

To use Apple TV+ on your TV you need one of the following... A TV that supports mirroring so you can mirror the movie on your iPhone to your TV. The most common way is to use a streaming box like the Apple TV 4K, a Roku steaming box, an Amazon Firestick steaming device, etc., to download the Apple TV App and play your content from there.

I'm an IT person, and I can't get this rubbish that Apple is peddling as a 'free subscription' to work either! As I said in an earlier post, Apple has mis-marketed this product and executed its launch very poorly! My earlier complaint was that very little content seemed to be 'free', but I am now finding that even though I am logged into AppleTV, I am still asked to sign up for a free trial to view even AppleTV productions. What a SCAM!

@Ikrupp - 1316 people clicked on the 'I have this question too' button on Bigboy699nz's comment since it was posted 24 December 2019 on this thread alone. When this many people don't 'get it', that suggests a failing on Apple's execution of the product! I'll repeat what I said in an earlier post - when a company arrogantly looks down on people who don't 'get' their products, that marks the beginning of their downfall.

Bloomberg reported that Apple TV Plus had more than 10 million subscribers as of February 2020. Another estimate, from research firm Ampere Analysis, pegged Apple TV Plus’s subscriber count at 33.6 million U.S. users as of the end of 2019 but estimated that the “vast majority” were not paying subscribers.

@lkrupp - I don't believe I was insulting towards you personally. I mentioned I was in IT merely as a response to one of the other posters who made a comment about this being difficult for not IT savvy people. I'm not a 'self proclaimed' IT professional. I do rather well in my specialization, and the market for my services seems to agree with me. I'd like to see how YOU fare at the IT that I specialize in!
