SD reader will not mount or recognize previously used SD card

I have a 2015 Macbook Pro with SD card reader on right hand side. I am running catalina. A previous used SD card that I bought new and used many times is totally unlocatable by the card reader. I am beginning to think that my upgrade to Catalina may be the cause i.e. 32bit vs 62bit. Any thoughts, ideas, suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks. Had to ask because camera card formatting is the most common issue with SD cards we see posted here.

Do you have other cards to try?

Have you looked into the SD slot to see if it is dirty. My son's MBP stopped recognizing cards and he found a big wad of lint stuck n the slot.

I'm inclined to try Image Capture anyway simply to see if it recognizes a card in the slot. If it does the card should appear in IC's left-hand source pane:

You might peruse the Catalina forums to see of others are feeling the pain:

Can you read the SD card on another computer?

Does macOS recognize any SD card on this laptop?

Try booting into Safe Mode to see if the SD card is recognized.

Check the Apple System Profiler to see if the SD Card Reader is physically seen. To access the System Profiler you can Option-click the Apple menu and select the first option (System Information?). I believe there is an "SD Reader" option on the left pane, if not then check under "Storage" or "USB".

In Disk Utility you may need to click on "View" and select "Show all devices" before the physical SD card appears in the left pane of Disk Utility.

Sometimes macOS cannot read or recognize a card or drive if something odd happens to it. In this case you may first need to re-partition the card using a Windows or Linux computer or by writing zeroes to the beginning of the SD card. This will destroy all data on the card though. I'm not certain what partition type & format to recommend although "Master Boot Record" and FAT or ExFAT are the most likely.

It is also possible the card is defective.

Thanks, I did try the image capture and the SD card showed up on my home screen on the right hand side. However; when I clicked on it no info showed up. Even then I could not access nor see in Finder or Disk Utility. Re-booted my machine and now the icon is gone on the home screen and image capture will not replicate. Thanks for you thoughts. Merry Christmas! Oh and I intend to try to clean the card reader slot.
