UPGRADED MAC MINI TO OS 10.14 (or higher) cannot even enter it w/o mouse pad (by Apple)

Our daughter gave us a refurbished MAC Mini for X-mas we have a (Apple) track pad which the unit recognized initially but when we upgraded from OS 10.12 and the unit restarted (as req'd) it will not register the trackpad and we can get no further.

Whats going on?

I hit Command+Option+p+r (at the same time) as I boot up and it did something to rboot the PROMs (or something) and it worked. Still we have had trouble with this (Apple) trackpad since the beginning, especially after replacing the batteries. Incidentally I use a USB dangle for bluetooth since I do not know if the "refurbished" MACMINI (2012) comes with bluetooth built in.

You will need a USB connected mouse/trackpad to troubleshoot the problem.

See this Apple article for wireless trackpad issues:

I remember one of our techs exploring intermittent wireless trackpad issues and I believe some older trackpads just don't work well with newer systems. If the trackpad is old enough, then perhaps Apple no longer supports it in later versions of macOS.
