Playing video - no sound, have to run sound volume completely down and then back up to get any volume

I have an iPhone 8 plus, wife has an iPhone 8. Both on IOS 13.3

Not sure exactly when it happened - but some IOS 13 update borked this. Both of us have the exact same issue. When attempting to play any video that is in Messages or in the Photos app - playback occurs with no sound. Sound volume is all the way up.

However, if you take the volume slider completely down, and then back up - we get the volume - for a while. Seems if the phone goes back to sleep we have the same problem again.

Soft booting restores sound volume - but only these two methods will restore sound volume.

Need a permanent fix instead of running the volume down and then back up, or rebooting the phone.

Hi there, TU57,

Thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities. I understand that since updating your iOS software, you and your wife have both noticed that video playback will be silent in the Messages app until you either decrease the volume than increase it all the way, or restart the phones. This will temporarily solve the problem, but not permanently. I'm happy to help!

Taking a look at the new iOS 13 features outlined in the Apple Support article iOS 13 - Features - Apple, it may be that these videos are muted by design. If that is the case, a volume mute icon (a speaker with a line through it) would appear in the upper right of the video. Tapping this should bring the audio back.

If that doesn't solve the issue or something else appears to be happening, I can recommend using If you hear no sound or distorted sound from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch speaker - Apple Support to troubleshoot. For additional assistance, please contact Apple Support directly: Contact Apple Support.

Cheers.

Best!
