Touch ID not working

I just received a MacBook Pro and established Touch ID.

When I push the small button at the upper right, with any finger, the system opens.

I unchecked the box in preferences to open the computer, then restarted, then checked it to open, but it still opens with any finger.

Does anyone have any other ideas on how to engage this security feature.

thank you.

Hello Teck123,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. It's my understanding that Touch ID unlocks your MacBook Pro with fingerprints you didn't add. You've done a great job trying to get this resolved! Please contact Apple Support for further assistance.

I did read Communities as you suggested, but I still don't understand the purpose of adding a fingerprint to open your computer. When I open my MacBook Pro, it opens to the page where I have to sign in with my password, so I do that. What is the purpose for the fingerprint except for payments, apple share, etc. It doesn't work on the sign in page.
