I am having the same error.

I got my 16" MacBook Pro a week ago and it worked fine for one day when it was connected to a charger. But if I close the lid and open it up in a couple of hours (I assume after the MacBook has gone from sleep to hibernation) it always does a cold boot. After I insert the password, I get a black screen and all the fans got 100% for one second. Then it boots again, I insert the password and I get logged in. I always get a crash report from the OS.

Back when I had 10.5.1 it was a kernel panic and said something about the CPU related setPowerState() function failing. I saved all these reports into files, but then one day the MacBook went into an endless boot loop and I had to reinstall the OS. That's when I lost 8 of these reports that I had stored on the disk.

Now with 10.5.2 I've only been getting GPU panic reports. Most of them have said "PowerPlay Failed Resume" and I was surprised that I found zero Google results with that exact text. Today I got my first "PowerPlay Failed to Initialize" and was able to find this forum thread with it.

I will be sending this unit back to Apple as I believe it to be a hardware issue. I've had problems with 10.5.1 and 10.5.2. I did a clean install of 10.5.2 and got the crash report even right after finishing the setup. I believe it's either in the CPU, GPU or the logic board.

I'll write here when I hear what they did to the MacBook in repairs.

P.S. During writing this post the MacBook did a sudden cold reboot while it was just on idle on the desk next to me. When I got to the desktop I got another "PowerPlay Failed Resume" but the system was also very unresponsive. I was unable to copy the full report to TextEdit or even press the "Send" button on the report. Mouse stopped moving. A minute later a black screen, 1 second of 100% fan noise and another cold reboot.

Use the Contact Support link at the top of every forum page. If they agree, you may be able to arrange for a courier to pick ip up and send it to a repair depot.

If its is more than 14 days, this falls into the Repair category. Apple promises to repair or replace at Apple's discretion, components found defective in materials or workmanship during the warranty period.

They don't generally send you a completely new computer. That said, if they replace the mainboard, it includes the processor, RAM , both graphics processors and the Boot Drive. So you essentially get a new computer out of it.

Same error here. I started with crashes after the MBP went to sleep and woke up again, now it crashes also regularly when I try to login. When I disconnect external monitor/power plug I can still login after a forced shutdown, so I now use it like this and disable sleeping. Seems like brining it back to repair will not resolve the problem anyway. I will still try the complete fresh re-install, just have to find the time as this is my working machine. Very disappointed.

I am having a similar issue as well. I had it consistently the first 3 days after my computer was delivered. I then turned off the "Automatic Graphics Switching" option in the energy saver menu under system preferences. It worked fine for a couple of days and I decided to turn the option back on as a troubleshooting step. It worked fine for another 2 days and then I got another crash. I turned off the option again and have left it off for about 3 days with no issues. This morning I got this error:

panic(cpu 6 caller 0xffffff7f8799c97b): GPU Panic: mux-regs 5 3 7f 1f 0 0 severity 3 WS-ready 0 switch-state 0 IG FBs 0 EG FBs 1:0 power-state 0 3D idle HDA idle system-state 2 power-level 5:0 power-retry 0:4 connect-change 0 : [3:0:0] GPU Not Found! PCI Config Access Fails!!!

From what I've been reading online, the issue appears to be with the intel gpu. However, I assumed that turning off the graphics switching option would keep me on the AMD GPU. I will keep you guys posted on what happens with my machine. Cheers.

Same issue .See above a subset of the stack trace which is sent to apple after reboot.

Are they going to contact me to ship me a new computer as a replacement ? Computer is a high end Mac which is couple of months old ,apple care ,32GB of memory..... I thought it will be better than the one that I bought in 2018. ,I have had 3 times the logic board replaced.

Prior those 2 ,I also had a computer who died from the same thing logic board.I did not fix it.

My daughter has a Mac pro as well .Logic board died got replaced after apple care expired. I paid for it.

Mr Apple support ,please look at the history of the Mac which are registered to my ID and the history of the repairs.

Likely ,the new one has the same issue....Logic board need to be replaced....

Will you be shipping 2 new computers to me for the new one that I bought a couple of months ago ,for the one bought in 2018 and I don't count the one that I paid for my daughter or the previous one which is sitting on a shelf because the logic board did not get fixed.

You have my contact information .You have the history of my purchase .You have the history of the crash because they get sent to you ....

What can you do for me when I spent more than $10.000 in computers in the past couple of years ?

UPDATE. Problem Solved !

About my problem. I tried disconnecting all the devices. When all devices were disconnected the problem didn't happened any more. So I started connecting one by one, testing which one was the problem. I found the a Power Adapter from Magsafe 2 to USB-C was the problem. I stopped using it and the problem didn't came back.

I strongly recommend to test your devices to identify if that is the problem.

Best Regards to everyone and a I hope my experience can be helpful for someone else.

Cristobal.

I suspect it's heat related.

Interestingly, plugging everything into the wrong side of the Mac (the left side) can apparently increase heat issues. I now ONLY plug my power in on the right side.

I know it sounds silly, but see this article.

Also, be warned that privacy webcam covers CAN CRACK YOUR SCREEN. Even thin ones. This happened to me.

Hey Everyone! Update on my machine. I sent it in to be repaired by Apple. It took 2 days. My machine now works like a champ. I highly recommend to contact Apple ASAP to get your machine repaired if you are getting the GPU kernel panic. The key thing I did was to tell them that I did all the troubleshooting steps including a full reinstall of the OS. Good luck everyone!

Have the same issue, mac crashes after some time, gpu or cpu panic, couldnt wake up from sleep would just reboot, got flickering blue screen more then 3 times now since first got it back in dec, crashes when switching automatically from igpu to dgpu vice versa, apple support's a dead end couldnt fix the issue kept blaming software and wait for "next update" = official response since update 15.2

Has anyone managed to fix this without a machine or logic board replacement?

I also have the same issues, and have been through all attempted steps including clean formatted install with SMC & NVRAM reset. For me the machine will always panic when resuming from sleep and will only successfully boot perhaps one time in 10, plus, the machine will panic with userspace watchdog timeouts randomly during normal use. This effectively renders the machine impossible to use for any meaningful task.

I have been in touch with Apple support and communicated the above, however, they insist it is a software issue and will not offer to replace the machine. They ran through the file collection call and they never made the scheduled call back or replied to any follow up emails. When I called them back they suggested only to change another energy saver setting (one I had already tried) and the issue still occurred while I was on the phone to them. I asked again for a machine replacement as the machine is unusable and they refuse, only offering to wait for a software fix or take it to a Genius Bar (with no clarity on what the options or process would be).

The fact that this happens straight from boot with clean formatted installs invalidates any attempt to blame this on 3rd party extensions or other user issues.

Personally I do not understand why they will not replace the machine as this seems to be a fix for most people, and this is terrible customer care from Apple and I'm amazed it is not a more well publicised issue. Although it does not seem to be every MacBook user impacted, it is clearly many customers who have these significant issues.

FYI, I have even tried running Windows under bootcamp and that also has issues. It has never panicked under safe boot but then in that mode the discrete GPU is not enabled.
