MacBook Pro Power Supply Gets REALLY HOT

Not sure how long this has been going on, but I recently noticed the power supply brick for my 2015 MacBook Pro gets insanely hot during use, particularly (but not limited to) full-screen video watching.

I don't even have to be watching very long; after one thirty-minute episode the thing is too hot to touch.

Even with limited, non-video use -- I just opened the laptop and have been on it for less than 10 minutes, and the brick is quite warm... not hot (yet), but a lot warmer than I'd expect for <10 minutes of use.

I can't imagine this is normal... but I wanted to ask before plonking down money for a new one, as they are pretty expensive. I'm definitely concerned because I use the laptop plugged in a LOT (more than on battery power).

(If it's relevant, the battery was replaced by Apple in June 2019. I cannot say for certain if the power supply was getting hot before that or not...)

The power supply will get warm/hot when under a load. Your Mac will never overcharge.

Typically always prefer to use the 3 prong grounded extension cord.

The power supply bricks are generally rated in wattage e.g. 45, 60 and 85 watts. The 2012 to 2015 MBP use a 60 watt power supply usually with a 'T' or 'L' shaped magsafe connector.

In About this Mac, select System Report>Power supply. This will show battery health (worth checking, even for a recently installed battery).

Then check the wattage of your power supply. It will be printed on the brick usually just below where the 3 pin adaptor slots in.

If the power supply was supplied with the MacBook, it may be a tad tired. Replacements are not too expensive.

With the appropriate model number or serial number, it's possible to check the specs of your MacBook via EveryMac.com which can be found via Google.

Also, check that your magsafe connector is the correct type for your model: this applies when you need to purchase a replacement power supply
