I have manually updated the location to my photos but won't appear on the "Places" map

I have updated some old photos by adding their location so that I can easily find photos in the Places tab but they aren't appearing. Please help! thanks

Are you by any chance using Photos 5.0 on Catalina? Then have a look here: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-250002016

Photos will only appear on the Places Map, if the originals have been copied into the Photos Library. Referenced photos are currently not appearing on the Places map.
