Airport disconnecting (4th gen)

I have a 11 year old 4th gen Airport Time Machine and recently its randomely shutting off the wifi - it goes orange and takes a few minutes to restart. It otherwise functions fine. I believe its fully up to date (v7.8.1) and it started happening the last few months but its becoming more frequent.

Anyway to check what is happening or is it just getting old and needs to be replaced? 11 years is a pretty good run to be honest.

Thanks.

11 years is unbelievable in a world of 3 years (if lucky.. do you feel.. lucky??) network junk.

11 Years is also an awful long time for a power supply.

Dig around in your house if you have any power supply with 2.5mm dc tip that fits the Extreme.. voltage from 12-16volt.. > or equal 1A is enough. I would NOT go out and buy one.. borrow sure.. begging.. go for it.. no stealing though!!

To actually test power supply you need a fair bit of equipment.. and the reality is it is cheaper in the long run and better to just buy your next router which will be dramatically faster, and in 2010 $$ probably cheaper than the Extreme.. only don't expect 11 years out of it.

Sorry I thought you had an Airport Extreme.. my mind pays tricks.

The TC internal power supply can be replaced.. but not with the rubbish on eBay. There is not one decent Delta supply there.. All of them are Flextronics. It is fairly complicated to repair but possible.. my website has details for DIYer..

gen4-a1409-issues

Also the gen4 is subject to a number of issues.. so you need to be pretty keen.

That is correct.. April 2018 Apple closed the division. GONE. But they did sell out the remaining stock which took a while.

You would not want a new Time Capsule really. The Gen5 was sold from 2013 to 2018 without any hardware update and are pretty fragile.

If you want to buy a replacement you can either go to a NAS. Synology is the one we recommend.

Or some routers do support Time Machine.. Synology also has a router, RT2600AC which is pretty good. Plug in a USB3 drive. High end Asus and some other brands also support it. Reliability not so good though in my experience.

Or you can just use a local disk which is far more reliable for Time Machine.
