In viewing pictures in the Catalina iMac, what does the numbers mean in the lower right quadrant?

When I view the pictures on my iMac in the photos app (Catalina)on the days tab - some of the photos may have a +1, +2 +4, etc in a little bubble in the right lower quadrant. what does the mean? If it means similar picture, where can I find the similar picture (it is not located next to it) and why are these bubbles different colors - gray, bluish-gray, pink, yellow. Thanks for the help

The number is telling you, how many photos have been omitted. The "Days" are showing only a curated selection of your photos, without very similar, redundant photos. If you click the number, you will be taken to the "All Photos" view for the day and will see the omitted photos as well.

The background color seems just to vary according to the main color of the picture in the background.

The advantage of clicking the number and going to "All Photos" will be, that you can see the photos in the correct aspect ratio, not cropped to squares, and the titles can be displayed below the thumbnails.

Just click the icon in the upper left corner to switch to the correct aspect ratio and enable "View > Metadata > Titles".
