Issue with pdf in preview

Since the update to macOS Catalina we have an issue when opening PDF-files in preview. Both in quick preview (with space bar) as in regular preview some files get what seems like 'scrambled'. This seems to happen to all files including images, from scans or vectorial drawings or plans. It happens to files created local, as sent to us by an external source.

Once a file is corrupted like this the problem seems to be incorporated in the file, because when opening in a different program (like acrobat reader for example) it shows the same issue.

Anyone with the same issue or a sollution to this one?

Thanks for the tips and advice, we still see some oddities:

  • my collegue has the same problem on his computer; same model and build as mine but slightly different software-setup. On my machine the problem started the end of december when i updated to Catalina, since the update on his machine yesterday he has the same issue.
  • it happens to files we created in some of our software on our machines (for example Sketchup Layout); as well to files coming from a third party created in other software (for example Vectorworks, sent via mail) or documents scanned to PDF including text and/or images.
  • when we open the same corrupted files on our iphone or ipad through our cloud-service (Egnyte) the files show 100% fine on those machines. Airdropping the same file to the macbook and then opening them in acrobat reader the file looks fine. When opening the same file in Preview the faults occure again, not exactly the same as in the previous file but in a different way.
  • Once a file is corrupted in Preview, Acrobat Reader gives an "error about loading a stream".

All this makes us suspect the problem is somewhere with the Preview-program in macOS Catalina. But this should also mean other people should have the same problem...

Jan 6, 2020 8:13 AM in response to Sbrox

If the current version of Adobe Acrobat Reader cannot present those PDF accurately then there is nothing you can do with the PDF, as Preview is a significantly older subset of the PDF specification, and has its own limitations on opening certain types of PDF.

My first thought is that the software generating those PDF is damaged, or software that post-processed those PDF damaged them. You should ask those that create them — to test them in a current version of Adobe Acrobat Reader at their location before they send them to you. If they are messed up at the source, that would be interesting to know.

You have considerable old baggage on your Mac, but I do not believe that to be the causal issue with PDF presentation problems.

You have a great many kernel extensions, some of which are really old.

There is even one which mentions 10.2...

/Applications/Egnyte Connect.app

egnytefs.kext (Egnyte Inc, 3.10.2 - SDK 10.11)

/Applications/duet.app

MSMVideoDevice.kext (SHAPE GmbH, 3.5 - SDK 10.12)

You also seem to be using stuff that should not be used in any OS since Mavericks: "memory cleaner"... these programs are detrimental to your system performance, at least.

Well, it is not clear what exactly may be causing the problem.

It seems clear that you have been upgrading this system in place, probably for several years and coming from previous macs.

This is extremely convenient, but after several successive updates you end up with pieces of old software that may not work in the newer OS, and that you don't even know what was there for in the first place.

A surefire way to avoid future problems is this:

1) Make a full backup, preferably two - I always recommend a current Time Machine backup on one drive, and a full bootable clone in another (the latter can be done easily with SuperDuper! or CarbonCopyCloner).

This way, if something goes wrong, you can just boot from this clone and be exactly as you were before.

2) Erase the system drive and install a clean version of Catalina. This could be done over the internet but that is very slow.

I would download the installer, quit it and follow the available instructions for creating a bootable installer on a thumb drive, then start from it, erase and install

3) Migrate ONLY the user accounts, and install any applications you need either from the App Store or the developers' websites. [Do NOT migrate applications, settings or other files, or you'd be importing the problems again]

This file is showing corrupt on my machine in its current location in the project-folder, but the one in dropbox is sent straight out of the cloud through airdrop via my iphone, where it gives a correct preview. It is a file coming from a client through mail with a scan of some sketches.

The following link is a link to the same file in its project-folder, linked through egnyte. This file shows corrupt in both preview and acrobat reader: https://mekersbroekxcloud.egnyte.com/dl/pbAIzzBo17
