Macbook Pro 16" with UltraFine 5K display not waking from sleep

That's what I had hoped when .1 came out. Then .2 came out. Then .3 came out.

Still nothing.

Have you contracted Apple support? I might raise a case with AppleCare to get some traction on this as this is unacceptable, given the amount of money this thing costs - especially maxed out.

I had the similar issue with the resolution drop. So it seems if I put into sleep manually everything is ok, but if it automatically goes into sleep then the resolution output to the LG monitor drops. Unplug the USB c and put back in and everything is ok.

A bit different from not coming on again, but similar. Mac book pro 16 is the highest spec apart from disk and the 34" LG was bought about 1 month ago

I really don't think this is an LG issue. I have the problem with a pair of 4K HP monitors as well, and at least one other poster said they were having it with an ultra-wide LG monitor as well. It's great that it isn't happening to the newer LG monitor, but even if I replaced my pair of LG 5K's at home I'd still have the problem with my HP's at work. This has to be an Apple thing.

Apple has had a problem with drivers and this monitor for many years. My MBP15 2017 had issues until fixes came out and then it was fine. When I changed to MBP16, same things start popping up, just very random and unpredictable.

Won't wake from sleep, MBP display brightness very dim on wakeup, both monitors flashing not able to sync, etc. Sleep/wake cycle sometimes fixes it, sometimes not.

I like to move my laptop around from my office to the family room a lot and that sequence of plugging/unplugging of the LG over time will eventually cause the Mac to kernel panic and restart.. it's very inconsistent, sometimes I can go a couple weeks without problems, and sometimes, will crash ever other day.

Hardware checks out fine.

Hopefully this driver gets fixed soon.

Oddly, my setup (LG 27" and 16" MBP) has not had the black external display bug for over a month now. Leaving on constantly and allowing everything to go to sleep. I do experience a drastic color shift on the external every so often (colors are over-staturated on wake). I am able to rectify by closing laptop lid and opening. Running 10.15.3.

Not sure if this is helpful, or has already been covered in some of the other replies, however I too am experiencing my connected external monitor not waking when the Mac is woken up.

My issue affects an old 30" Apple Cinema Display which is connected to a Belkin Thunderbolt 3 dock via Display port -> Dual link display port adaptor. (I know.... clumsy setup but it was working flawlessly with my 15" 2018 MacBook Pro Retina)

Now that I am using the 16" MacBook Pro (2.4 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9, AMD Radeon Pro 5500M 8 GB, Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536 MB) I'm experiencing the issue.

Seems that it is an issue that applies other displays and not just the LG

Reasonable to think its either a Catalina issue, or graphics card based?)

I am really sorry to hear that the update didn't help your LG 4K. Because I wanted to chime in that for me too, 10.15.4 appears to have fixed the wake issues with my LG 5K and Macbook 16. No problems since installing and again waking this morning. But I had hoped this would be true for all monitors. If you can summon the energy, you might start another case so they know they still have work to do.

Same here. my problems were really bad before the first update, and it's all fine now. Occasionally one or both screens will wake with the colors off, but I just open the displays control panel and switch color profiles and switch back and it's fine.

I have the same problem with a 16" MBP and an original LG Ultrafine 4K display. every morning I need to unplug and replug the thunderbolt for the display.

Did you test with brand new, fresh installs of the OS or with a restore from a previous system?

it actually seems to happen more now for me. it used to be just long sleeps -- now anytime the monitor goes off it wont come back on again without a plug and unplug.

Having the same issues as well. Fresh install, reset SMC, zap PRAM, all with no change in symptoms. If I manually put it to sleep it will wake up *almost* all the time. If I let is sleep on it's own it's always a black screen on the LG.

Also I use the MacBook closed when attached to the display with a Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse. Lights (like caps lock) work indicating the laptop did wake up. Also if I open the Macbook the screen immediately works while the display is still black.

Oh how I wish Apple didn't get out of the consumer display business. This LG Ultrafine 5k has been junk and bug ridden since I got it years ago.

This is interesting Nick. I just updated my MBP 15 to Catalina to test the LG this weekend. I will run more tests this evening to see if I can replicate the issue. I don't know how to escalate an issue except that when I recall Apple Support, I give them the original case number to look at. Then the support staff contact engineers to see if they can get a solution. I assume this is recorded? Also when I went to the Apple Store, all the notes from phone calls were recorded and the genius was referring to them. I also suspect Apple Bots are trawling these pages. As Apple sells the 16 inch as a power graphic machine that can run multi monitors I suspect they would want to fix the issue?

So far in this discussion we are pointing at one of three things that could contribute to the problem.

1) Catalina

2) Graphic card driver

3) LG monitor firmware

If anyone can think of anything else, please continue to the list.
