Macbook Pro 16" with UltraFine 5K display not waking from sleep

Thanks very much for this. I would really be interested in confirming the model number of your LG 5K, if that's not too much trouble.

But this sounds like an good option for now. For me, when my display goes to sleep, it often won't come back on even if the computer has not itself gone to sleep--I would like to be able to prevent the computer from going to sleep (to continue to check e-mail, play music, etc.) and, when I come back to it, to wake up the monitor, which it often doesn't. I've gone ahead and installed Brew and am only stuck now at how to edit that file you mention. I can find the rc.sleep file, but how exactly would I add that command you specify? (I only ever did Structured Basic in grade 10 computer science, way back...)

You can try using the nano editor

nano /usr/local/etc/sleepwatcher/rc.sleep

Add the line at the bottom of the file.

pmset sleepnow

Then control O will save the file and control X will exit the editor.

Honestly, Apple is losing almost a 30 year loyal customer over this. Well this and the general decline of innovation in general. MacOS isn’t even the safest or the most secure anymore. But hey, they have lots of streaming services now...

Please forgive my ignorance mick80234, but I'm not sure I've followed your instructions correctly, as my Macbook is not going into a true sleep when my LG 5K sleeps following my edits to the file. Here is what the file now looks like (might you be able to confirm if I've inserted the command "pmset sleep now" correctly?):

Thank´s Nick! It almost drove me crazy; I have two LG 5K Ultrafines (work and home) hooked up to my 16" MBP. Both show the same issue (I am on 10.15.3). At least I know now, that I must not bother to find a solution... I will wait and hope that Apple fixes this quickly! :-)

16" MBP, purchased in December. 2.3 GHz 8-Core i9. 32 GB RAM. 5500M 4GB Video Card. LG UltraFine Monitor set to 5120 x 2880 Resolution. I do not use anything to calibrate it. I use the external as my main display and the MBP as the secondary display. I have it connected using an Apple Thunderbolt Cable vs the LG cable and also use the power supply from Apple vs the power from the display.

That is super helpful, because yours thus has to be the latest, L-model of the LG 5K Ultrafine because I'm almost positive that that was all Apple was selling then, as now. And if you've been having problems then there's no point in me persisting in trying to get LG to replace my B-model with one like yours. You've spared me that trouble, so thank you.

So far so good for me on 10.15.4... I left it overnight. Woke up fine this morning. I was actually not experiencing the issue as of late though. It was waking from sleep fine. The only issue I did notice is a drastic color shift on the external display on wake at times. It was fixed by closing laptop lid and reopening.

oh speaking of which, my bluetooth (non apple) mouse stopped working. it would work for a bit, then stutter, then stop responding. I had to switch it to using its own tranceiver. BUT the monitor works, so ill take it.

Another update, after 10.15.4 update (sorry not 10.15.14) called 10.15.4 supplemental caused the Macbook Pro 16 to cycle connecting and disconnecting with the LG UltraFine Display. This is random and can happen from a cold boot or during use.

Rebooting or unplugging the thunderbolt 3 connector and plugging back in sometimes stops the cycle from seconds, minutes or several hours before recurring. I have no idea what is causing this and currently on an apple support call to see if anyone else has this issue. This is very likely a software issue as only software seems to have caused this problem.

Did they ever resolve this? I have a new MB pro 16 in and am having this issue on day 3. Otherwise the machine is a beast its just the LG Ultrafine monitor that worked without issues on my 13 in pro.

• I agree, especially seeing that they advertised this MacBook Pro model as having the power to run two 6K displays with resolutions of 6016 x 3384 at 60Hz.
