Macbook Pro 16" with UltraFine 5K display not waking from sleep

Mine did too..... yay.....

Except.. within a couple hours, the entire computer locked up and needed a "hold the power button" reset... ffs....

Here we go again..

Has the resolution drop/blur problem (solved by unplugging then plugging back in) persisted for anyone else after 10.15.4? (with MBP 16" and UF 5K)

With the update the issue got worse for me. I didn’t have to power cycle the monitor by unplugging but now I do. Was only a resolution drop prior to the update now the monitor just dies.

mine has gone back to not waking anymore from sleep. so ... no clue how that happened.

Same here. Seemed after the last Apple OS patch. Works sometimes ok then problem is back next day

Likewise, updated with hope but soon dashed.

I have made another interesting discovery. Yesterday I plugged in a 5TB portable disk directly with a USB-C cable into one of the USB-C ports. The disk was not able to connect, ie, it did not get enough power.

I moved the cable to another port and the disk was connected. So then I replugged it into the port that did not work and again it was not connected. So I restarted the computer and the disk was connected and able to read and write.

I then replugged the disk into the 2nd port which originally worked and the disk was not connected.

From this experience, I feel that the SMC might be having problems? I did do a SMC reset but that did not help. It appears that all four usb-c ports cannot be used at the same time?

I have had this problem since I took delivery of a launch day 16" system (top spec, including the 8GB Radeon graphics). My previous 2019 15" system with Vega 20 *(running Mojave) hasn't had this problem.

I've had some other display issues when I plug in an HDMI displays that cause my UI to lag and my fans to ramp up, although nothing in Activity Monitor suggests any issue. This appears unrelated to the above.

I was very excited to hear about 10.15.3 but it didn't solve my problem.

I can reproduce this every. time.

Screen still shows up under Displays, but nothing appears on the screen. I need to reconnect the display.

Tried multiple cables etc. Screen worked fine on the 15".

I want to open a case with AppleCare. Do you have any references I could use so that I may gain some traction?

Checking in with my specs. I'm experiencing the same waking problem and 100% brightness with my 16" MBP and LG Ultrafine 5k.

Specs are maxed out. Not sure if anyone else has the same on here, but I'm leaning towards this being a software issue.

Wow, I'll bet you're a joy to be around... Thanks for turning this into an argument rather than a helpful discussion. I was merely trying to offer all the issues I've had RELATIVE to my screens not working after sleep/wake. Here's a summary of my issues:

A 15" MBP works great with all the peripherals - LG5K's, HP Z24's, etc. Wakes every time, wakes after disconnect, supports dual screens, etc. I have had the screen NOT WAKING, or both SCREENS FLICKERING, or the MBP sometimes CRASHING after plugging in ANY monitor and opening the lid with the new 16" model. Sometimes moving the plug to the opposite side of the MBP fixes the issue for a while (different thunderbolt busses), but eventually fails the other side too. It always works fine immediately after a restart. It also seems to worsen over time/use. as if the more apps I've used and the more things I've had open, the more likely I am to see the SLEEP/WAKE issue and have to restart. Again, IT ALWAYS WORKS AFTER A RESTART for a little while - even quick sleep/wake tests.

While I was backing up a drive from another machine I was working on, I had one of my two LG5K's plugged in and working. I plugged in a USB-C external drive and both the LG and the MBP screen flickered as if it affected the bandwidth of the Thunderbolt buss so much that it couldn't handle both. A restart fixed this temporarily too.

Since some people suggested that it was a power issue with the LG5K, I tried using my power brick. Using the power brick along with the LG5K or with the HP Z24 plugged in caused my system to restart. I tried multiple times. This did not happen every time.

I have tried Apple Thunderbolt cables, I have tried the LG5K cables, and I have tried OWC Thunderbolt cables, and the problems do not change. Again, this isn't just with the LG5K.

Sometimes when I plug in an LG5K, or one of our HP Z24's, my fans run a lot and the MPB sometimes gets pretty warm.

Sometimes when I have the SLEEP/WAKE issue, and I try sleeping and waking a couple times and/or unplugging and replugging my monitor(s), the MBP will just crash and return to login.

I have tried two different LG5K's (maybe the same model, but almost 2 years apart), and 2 HP Z24's.

I've tried two different 16" MBP's out of the box with no customization.

I can try some other monitors - Asus, LG Ultrawides, HP EliteDisplays - we have dozens, but I've kind of given up on this. I hav 4 monitors that cost about $4K in total, and none of them work with this MBP. They work with any other 15" MBP, my HP ZBook, and other random laptops we've tried. It's great that someone doesn't seem to have the issue with the newer LG5K, but like I said, I also have the issue with an HP Z24 4K monitor, and someone else on here said they were experiencing it with a different monitor as well.

Something else I have noticed, and I'm sure you'll get mad that I added this as well, sometimes when I have been plugged into the LG5K or an HP Z24, and unplug, leave the office, and use my MBP after a sleep/wake cycle, I still have some screen issues - autobrightness/truetone (when I have nothing plugged in) and disabling both of those and reenabling them SOMETIMES fixes the issue. A restart always fixes this issue.

My problem is worst. Just received my Macbook Pro 16, with i9/64GB/2T/5500M8G. I have two LG Ultrafine 5K currently connected to my 2013(late) MacPro via Thunderbolt2 to Thunderbolt3 adapter, both monitors are working fine in this configuration with the MacPro.

However, When I disconnect the adapters from these monitors and connected the Macbook Pro 16 to them via Thunderbolt 3 cables, neither of them will light up. I tried the manual sleep method to no avail. One observation, as soon as I connect these T3 cables into the MBP 16, the machine beeped. Not sure what that means, but it certainly knows something is connected to the bus, but then nothing showed on the system information page under Thunderbolt.

I connected a HDMI monitor via a Thunderbolt 3 to HDMI connector, and it works fine.

Thoughts? Anyone?

I've been trying this all day and so far its been working.

I have a LG5K monitor as well as an old Apple Thunderbolt monitor and a LaCie drive connected, with the same sleep problems on my MBP16" purchased in Dec 2019.

I posted earlier that my issue is similar, but not exactly the same as others' here. When I try to use the LG display, my 16" MBP repeatedly connects and disconnects (I can hear the power "ding" over and over as the screens go blank and come back on). I have tried various fixes, like turning off power nap, with no success.

However, I did just discover one interesting thing. If I use the supplied black USB C cord to power the MBP and run the second display, I have the problem described above. But, if I unplug the LG display, then plug in the Apple USB C power cable (attached to a power brick) and, lastly, plug the LG USB C cable in, the problem stops. This would tell me that it's a power issue. The display doesn't seem to be able to supply enough or consistent power; when the Apple power brick is in use, the display works fine.

Exactly. This is the exact issue with the firmware of the LG monitor and not just macOS. However, people blame macOS...

10.15.4 is out... release notes specifically mention LG Monitor bug fix. Let's keep our fingers crossed!

thats interesting. I have the 5500 card so you might be correct. Strangely I didn’t have the power problem before, it just decreased the resolution
