Macbook Pro 16" with UltraFine 5K display not waking from sleep

Very frequently my new Macbook Pro 16" does not wake the connected LG Ultrafine 5K when resuming from sleep. Specifically I think it might be that it does not wake it when it has gone to sleep automatically, but does wake it if put to sleep manually through Apple > Sleep. After waking, the Mac thinks the display is still connected so still displays windows across the two desktops, but the display is not powered on. Putting it to sleep manually and waking again seems to resolve the issue.

Is anyone else experiencing this? I've tried resetting SMC which has not fixed it, the problem occurs on all ports, and it clearly can power on the display it is just failing to do so, so I'm thinking this is probably a macOS software issue.

I am experiencing the same problem with my new MBP 16" with AMD Radeon Pro 5500M with 8GB of GDDR6 memory. The Mac will not wake up the LG Ultrafine 5K monitor, when resuming from sleep mode. Does not matter if sleep mode is automatic or manual. After sleep mode, the LG monitor will not wake but Mac still thinks it has two active monitors. My old 15"MBP does not have this problem with this monitor.

Have spent many hours with Apple support and gone through the following 'repairs': SMC, PRAM, Safe Mode, Reinstall OS. Then played musical chairs with all the thunderbolt slots, to check if one of them was not working. Today I went to the Apple Store and had a Genius run all the diagnosis software to check the hardware. All Hardware turns out to be okay. Workarounds are: Restart Computer or pull out cable from monitor to Mac and replug it in. And yes, while testing no external devices plugged in and had the Mac's own power chord charging the Mac, so as not to rely on the LG monitors power supply.

The Apple Genius is pretty confident that the problem is a software glitch that will be fixed in the next OS update.

10.15.4 is out... release notes specifically mention LG Monitor bug fix. Let's keep our fingers crossed!

16" MBP on 10.15.4 --- original LG Ultrafine 4k still doesnt wake unfortunately. Had to do the unplug and plug dance.

It took a few seconds, but my Ultrafine 5k did wake with 10.15.4. Hopefully not just a fluke.

Mine did too..... yay.....

Except.. within a couple hours, the entire computer locked up and needed a "hold the power button" reset... ffs....

16: MBP on 10.15.4. Still no go on both my LG 5K monitors. One purchased 2 years ago, the other on purchased last September.

These monitors work fine with my Mac Pro.

Just an update, that 10.15.14 has resolved the LG5k monitor not waking up or no image problem. Glad to see this resolved for several folks.

Has the resolution drop/blur problem (solved by unplugging then plugging back in) persisted for anyone else after 10.15.4? (with MBP 16" and UF 5K)

With the update the issue got worse for me. I didn’t have to power cycle the monitor by unplugging but now I do. Was only a resolution drop prior to the update now the monitor just dies.

K-NJ. That’s what happened to me as well. The patch created problems and now after a couple of unrelated reboots everything seems to be working

Same here. Seemed after the last Apple OS patch. Works sometimes ok then problem is back next day

The last update fixed it most of the time but not all. It's a lot more rare now, perhaps once in every 10-20 times as opposed to consistently. Glad it's not just in my head!

it actually seems to happen more now for me. it used to be just long sleeps -- now anytime the monitor goes off it wont come back on again without a plug and unplug.

thats interesting. I have the 5500 card so you might be correct. Strangely I didn’t have the power problem before, it just decreased the resolution

Did you try turning off Power Nap? I've been putting mine to sleep every time I leave it just to test and so far it's woken quickly every time I've pressed the space bar.
