Mail on mac stuck 'moving messages'

I use Mac Mail for emails, synced with an Exchange account. Ever since the Catalina upgrade, when I move an email from the inbox to other folders, or when I try to delete them, the Mail app gets stuck in 'moving messages' and so I would see the movement or deletion of the message locally, but it will not make the change in the server and the change will not sync to my other devices.

I tried restarting with no success. Also deleting the account from the app and adding it again. This did solve the issue for a day and then the problem returned.

This is a recurring issue. Please help.

I had this very same problem. I was ultimately successful by deleting the "Envelope index" files described here on Computerworld.

After deleting these files, upon the next time you start Mail, you will see a dialog that says the mailboxes need to be rebuilt. After that finishes, all was back to normal for me. Note that I did lose the "stuck" emails that were being moved at the time. In my case, I was moving emails from a non-iCloud account into an iCloud email folder.

One last thing...the article for that link is from 2014, and specifies version "V2" in the path to get to the Envelope Index. This should be "V7" for the latest version of Mail as I write this. Hope it helps.

In mid August 2020, my Apple Mail program got stuck moving messages from the Inbox to Trash, especially multiple messages. Then I noticed deleting the Trash constantly causes a Crash, deleting more than 2 messages at a time. Apple apparently, and refuses to acknowledge they made a Server Change. As the only Mail program and exchange I have is with Apple. I noted that Apple has moved past any support whatsoever for El Capitan. All they care about is new products and technology, it doesn't matter if they work, for Apple, now it's all about glitz and glitter, nothing else.

Thank you. I am going through "Baby Steps" with this process, as described in the article. I did change a few items in Mail Preferences, ie: DRAFTS, as suggested. I have noticed a slight improvement, the one issue that still exists is deleting multiple messages from the Trash, seems any more than 3 emails at a time causes a crash. Seems to me this is more of a server issue, than my actual computer. I have a concern about the complete process, as many of my messages date back to 2008, and yes there is a reason I need to retain them. I would not like to even think about losing anything.

From what I can tell after playing around some more, this only occurs with Exchange servers. However, if the amount of emails is large enough, the "stuck moving messages" problem will occur on any Exchange account. I've tried three different ones and it happened on every single one. However, the problem does not occur for me on IMAP accounts. Hence, the workaround to this problem seems to be to use IMAP instead of Exchange. It seems that someone the Mac Mail app is not handling Exchange perfectly well.

Mine is working now. I have Gmail, not Exchange. The usual steps of synchronizing and rebuilding may have helped, but I believe the critical steps for me were to disable the rules that I had. Some of the rules were set to move emails to different directories. I don't know what that was a problem, but disabling my rules in Mail.app seemed to allow things to be unstuck.
