Can I delete "Mobile Documents

Using Catalina 10.15..2 on an iMac.

In order to test a problem I was having, Support had me sign out of iCloud and then back in. During the process, MacOS asked me if I wanted to back up my Documents and Desktops folders. I said yes. After I signed back in, I had 85GB less space on my hard drive.

I discovered that in ~/Library/Mobile Documents there were Documents and Desktop folders that matched the ones already on my hard drive. I looked in a recent Time Machine backup and they weren't there a few hours before.

In order to reclaim that 85GB of hard drive space, is it safe for me to delete those folders in Mobile Documents?
