Is there something else I can do to reset the airpods or does the red light indicate a problem which needs to be sorted by a technician?

Hello,
Flashing red usually means a bad connection between the AirPods and the charging case. Check for lint or other debris.
Also try a full reset: Reset your AirPods
Good luck.
