Mail crashes only when I delete emails

I'm using High Sierra on a Mac Mini, and the only issue I have is that whenever I delete messages or empty the trash in Mail, the Mail application crashes and I get the usual crash report with the option to send to Apple and re-open the app.

I've tried both methods of selecting all mail in the trash and deleting them and also using the context menu to Erase Deleted Items and in both cases the application crashes.

The only thing I've tried so far is to delete the preferences files following some previous advice I found in the forum.

Not the worst thing to deal with but I appreciate any suggestions for potential fixes.

thx

I've been experiencing this problem with Mail for months and have tried every possible solution, including working with Apple engineers, without success. On my own, I made a simple change in Mail Preferences>Accounts>Mailbox Behaviors. I set my iCloud and me.com accounts so that the Junk Mailbox is Junk under On My Mac and Erase junk messages after one day. I set the Trash Mailbox to Trash under On My Mac and Erase deleted messages Never. I used the same settings for my earthlink.net IMAP accounts and Mail hasn't crashed for the past three days even when I use select all and batch delete my Junk folders and Trash folders. Like I said, even the Apple engineers couldn't come up with a solution and I still can't believe this is all it took... but so far, so good on my Mac Pro running High Sierra.

I did some additional experimenting on this.

I tried the various suggestions that have been posted — safe boot, etc — with no success.

Since I have a number of email accounts on various services, I tried emptying the trash selectively for each account.

What I have found that this problem exists only for my Apple email account @me.com on iCloud.

Thus, it would appear to be a problem related with email on iCloud.

What to do?

I gave up on the troubleshooting when Mail.app started crashing while I was just reading the emails. Additionally, the Message Viewer was not showing the correct mail body in the lower pane.

So, I downloaded Spark.

https://sparkmailapp.com

It has a bunch of nonsense I don't need or use, but so far it hasn't crash when I delete messages.

I will miss Mail.app. It did everything I needed, and did it well, until just this year.

I have the same hardware set-up that Nick has and I am also using the same Mac OS X version. (My MacMini can't upgrade beyond High Sierra.) I am also experiencing the same CRASH issue with the Mail App when deleting several emails at once from the Trash. I booted up in safe mode and experienced the same crash issue as well. As my JUNK folder collects about 100 items per day I pretty much trash the Junk emails and empty the Trash daily. (Select ALL, select Delete, *CRASH*, select Reopen, *CRASH*, select Reopen again, back in business) FRUSTRATING! What's more frustrating though is Apple's silence and seemingly NON-RESPONSIVENESS to the issue. This has been an issue for me for more than 6 months now. Apple has received more than 180 CRASH responses from my system alone during that time. Nothing but silence from their end. I guess they're hoping I'll get feed-up with it the issue an spend a pile on a new system. That's enough whinging from me as I am aware this form is intended for assistance to others and not for complaining.

My wife has a different mac and its happening to her also. I am considering switching to a third party mail program since it has been a long while, lots of reports to apple, by many people and still no fix. Instead, today I received a Safari update that lets me take my Chrome bookmarks into Safari... like I needed that. Let's hope they will fix this. It seems to me to focused on the pull down menu to "Erase Deleted Items". I can still delete files from my mailbox one at a time and then go to the trash and slowly (only) delete them one at a time from the trash and hope. :) take care.

Just a bit of an update

Lately mail started crashing even without deleting emails. I re-installed High Sierra using Cmd-R at boot-up, but problem persists. It crashes unexpectedly for no apparent reason. I stopped deleting messages manually and just set up Mailbox Behaviour in Preferences to delete messages after 1 week, we'll see what happens. If this goes on I'll try Thunderbird. I have been reluctant to upgrade to Catalina because of the age of my Mac Mini, it's late 2012. I hate the thought of having to buy a new one only because of this, eventually I will buy one mostly to move to SSD drives etc. I also read mixed reviews around upgrading to Catalina, the few apparent benefits don't warrant the risk that comes whenever we do a major upgrade.

I have the same problem. Appeared sometime in March 2020. I have mail auto delete after 30 days, and Mail crashes every morning. I am running OS Sierra 10.12.6, Mail v10.3 (3273) on a late 2009 iMac 27". I can manually delete from trash one at a time with no problem. I received this following message in a dialog box for the first time today after selecting multiple emails in Trash and hitting the delete key:

The Message "(mail title)" could not be moved to the mailbox “Trash – (ouraccount@pacbell.net).

The IMAP command “UID COPY (to Trash) failed for the mailbox “Bulk Mail” with server error: UID COPY Server error – Please try again later.

I do have multiple email accounts from gmail.com, pacbell.net, and mac.com.

I'm wondering if the crash in Mail is due to Mail trying to communicate to other servers and this communication fails. Not sure how to address this, but it is curious.

Next time Mail crashes I'll check the console app for a crash report.

I have been looking through these threads to see how to resolve this, and no solution has helped so far. Maybe this is an IMAP issue with our older systems?

I had mail open on my computer (same system as others), and went to WebMail (icloud). I deleted emails there and still the mail software would crash even if I was doing nothing with it except having it open on the desktop. When it detected the change I made (deleting via iCloud on WebMail), it would crash. It has been like this for a while so I cannot trace it back to a specific event or update.

Sorry, I have numerous emails through different carriers in addition to my apple email so I can't now. A few days ago, I did clean out all trash and junk emails from all my accounts. I had mail open through some of them and it would crash. Finally, when I was done and restarted mail it do not crash (with the trash empty. But in the last few days with new emails added to the trash, its crashing again.
