new iPhone- don't want to add old pictures

I have a new iPhone and DO NOT want to upload all of my iCloud photos onto the new phone. Is there a way to sign into iCloud on my new phone without downloading all of my old pictures?

Greetings, traciela!

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities! That's a great question you have about restoring from iCloud but not downloading your photos from iCloud. What you'll need to do is follow the steps in this article to Restore or set up your device from an iCloud backup and be sure you do not turn on iCloud Photos. You'll see information about using iCloud Photos in this article to Set up and use iCloud Photos.

Another option available if you'd like to have the photos on your device, but would like to save space on the device itself is to follow the steps in this article to Manage your photo and video storage.

"Store your photos and videos in iCloud

Your photos and videos are stored on your device in their original, high-resolution version. This means that they use a lot of space on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. With iCloud Photos, you can make more space available on your device and have your entire collection, everywhere you go.

Get started with iCloud Photos:

  1. Tap Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos.
  2. Turn on iCloud Photos.
  3. Select Optimize iPhone Storage to make more space on your device.

With Optimize Storage, smaller, space-saving photos and videos are kept on your device while all of your original, full-resolution versions are stored in iCloud. And as long as you have enough space in iCloud, you can store as many photos and videos as you want."

Have a wonderful day!
