I use the maps in my cr and use it with the usb port in the car. If I
don't plug it in I get an ssl server error message (i think) and maps
won't work at all. I have data minutes I could use through my phone
provider but that doesn't seem to work. A salesman at meier said maybe
it was a setting on the phone that was my problem. don't know alot
about apple systems so not sure if that's the problem and when I looked
everything seems to be right for what I want. have iso 13.3 on an

Maps is an iOS app and is installed on an iPhone by default. Is that the app that you are talking about?
If YES then the answer is that you can use maps without connecting your iPhone to any USB port. Maps should run independently on your iPhone.
Did I misunderstand your question? Let me know. Thanks.

I don't think the fact its plugged to the USB port in your car has any relevance on why you get the eror. Its probably just a coincidence.
The SSL error generally points to a security issue with a website, so its kind of strange you would get in an App. Its also completely unrelated tothe USB port.
Do maps work when not in the car?
Just outside, standing and you try to use the maps app does it work?
Car has to be off when I plugin iphone. once phone is plugged in I start car and everything works as I want it to with carplay. I tryed it at a rest stop about 30 miles from home without plugging the phone into the cars usb port and the app would not work. I tried it out side here at home away from my wifi and it worked fine. Your right about the cell data as I have prenty of data minutes. The car I thought works as a wifi point with the onstar. That is what I think is making the difference. Not sure right now what the error message is as I don't get it here at home but rather away from home and out on the road. Something about a server error is all I know. Can book mark this page and see if it will do it latter tonight. Checked your suggestion and Cell data is turned on. anything else you can think of?

The OnStar Wi+Fi Hotspot in your car is the culprit. Is your OnStar WiFi subscription still active?
Your app(s) work when you are away from the car and therefore away from OnStar WiFi. Try something, Turn off WiFI on your iPhone before you get in your car and activate CarPlay connected to the USB port. Everything should work well. Then stop somewhere and disconnect your iPhone from the USB port. I bet your Maps app will work on your iPhone drawing data from your cellular connection.
The difference here is an active WiFi connection to OnStar which takes over when you are around or inside your running car and doesn't provide an internet connection. If your OnStar subscription has expired then remove that WiFi access point from your iPhone by going to Settings-->>Wifi and forgetting it from the list of available WiFi networks.
That is my theory.

I agree with Axel. Sounds like your iPhone is trying to connect to the OnStar Wifi when you disconnect from the USB port.
Make sure wifi is turned off on your iPhone, so it doesn't attempt to do that, and should rely on your cell data for internet access, in the Maps app.
Not sure what maps has to do with USB.
Can you perhaps clarify your question please?
An SSl error has occurred and a secure connection to the server cannot be made. This is the error message I get from the phone if I do not use the usb connection
I will try this as soon as I Can. Kind of goes along with what I was thinking but wanted to run this by someone anyway.
