After installing Catalina, I lost most of the contacts in my Apple contacts application. How do I get them back?

Restore them from your backup. If you have been using iCloud on the computer, then be sure you log into iCloud on the upgraded computer. Your contacts should be restored via iCloud, although it may take a little time.
