skin irratations and itchy ears from powerbeats pro wireless

Recently purchased power beats pro wireless and from the moment I started using them.I noticed itching in my inner ear, and where the hooks sit on the top of your ear.My right ear also has some drainage from the inner ear. How many others have this same experience.I’ve read on other websites that quite a few people are also experiencing the same problem and if Apple is going to back there product?

I had exactly the same issue. Although to took a while to develop. Probably 2-3 months of regular use. Now if I wear for 30 mins I get the symptoms and have to avoid using for a week for them to clear up.

i solved this by replacing the tips with those from a 3rd party. I found a company called Comply who make replacement tips for many different headphones. I think the main selling point is they are made from a special foam that gives great sound benefits as well as comfort. I ordered a set, I am in the UK so they took a few weeks to arrive. I have to say I have been impressed. They take a while to get used to. However I have had no reaction, so I am back using my Powerbeats pro without issue.

I purchase my power beats pro in April 2020. They were nice, comfortable, and the sound quality was great. After about 2 days of wearing just the right one. I started getting drainage from my ear canal and behind my right ear. I stop wearing the one on my right ear and put on the left one. The same thing started. I cleaned them both with alcohol. I waited until my ears healed from the ear infections that happened afterward. I never had any ear infections in my life and I’m 42. So it was very painful and I lost hearing in my right ear for 3 days. Today which is June 30, I put the one on my right ear again and the drainage started again after about an hour of having it on. Is there a lawsuit or anything going on with these power beat pro’s?

Well after waiting a while for my ears to heal up and receiving the foam tips to try instead, I'm sad to report that my ears still reacted similarly (itchiness, drainage, crustiness) almost immediately after wearing the headphones with the foam tips instead for an hour or two. Granted, it wasn't as severe of a reaction as I experienced with the silicone tips they came with (it's already starting to heal after a couple days, whereas last time it took a week to two weeks for me to be fully healed). Because of this I'm not sure if it's my ears being very sensitive or if it's like others suggest that it has to do with the headphones themselves as well and not just the material (like the heat it gives off or something?). Because the foam tips still didn't work for me and caused issues, I attempted to get a refund but they told me since I bought it through a 3rd party I'd have to go through them. So I'll try them for a refund. If not, I guess I'll just have wasted $200 on headphones I can't use. Sigh. :(

Well if nothing else, at least I don't feel crazy any more....I have been experiencing these same exact issues. AND as many others have said, I used my beats for months before the issue developed. The irritation was the worst when I wore them on a plane (just a quick one hour flight). My ears were literally dripping all day long. I had to stand under the shower for at least 5 min just to get all of dried liquid off my ears and out of my hair.

I am working from home currently and would LOVE to use my beats again. I have tried cleaning them, putting vaseline on my ears before using them, and only using them for short periods of time, but nothing seems to help.

I hadn't called Apple because I thought it was just me but now I know that isn't the case. Even if I don't get a refund I will at least call them to add to the list of people with this issue.

I also am willing to provide any feedback if anyone gets someone on the phone willing to listen to all of us with this issue!

Yes, my ears are fully recovered and I haven't worn the PBPs for a few months. I did actually send them back and got a refund, but I emphasized all through that lengthy process that Apple should get their scientists on the job, find out what is causing the issue, fix it and bring out a new version of the PBPs, because it's a great design (those ear hooks), especially for people like me whose ear shape can't hold onto other in-ear 'phones. Surely Apple can afford to do this (the company is now worth $2 trillion!), and for the sake of its reputation alone I would have thought it would be worth its while to deal with this issue rather than seemingly trying to ignore it and hope it goes away.

Hi I_rina,

Have you any feedback on previous incidents and the outcome for the victims of the allergic reaction due to the Powerbeats Pro earbuds

Can Apple speed up the process and stop wasting the victims and apple support personnel dealing with individual queries

Victim?! Really? None of this seems logical to me at all.

I am allergic to wheat, I'm not looking to get anything out of it or a handout. This is my biology and this is my problem.

If they switched materials used I'm sure there would be a bunch of people that have an allergy to whatever that new material is.

Try another set of covers, get some gels. Work great for me and I'm not wasting my or anyone's time on this.

Had you an allergic reaction to EarPods made from acrylates

thanks

I’ll look into these

Not until I was older. And to be perfectly clear this would be considered a "sensitivity".

It started about three years ago with a pair of Sony's then B&O and then I finally went to the doc after the sennheisers. Never had an issue till then. There's a couple dozen compounds in synthetics that can cause this. I wouldn't get so stuck on the acrylate family as the issue. Might be something else and since this would be a sensitivity it's near impossible to test for it.

alistair284, the process will take a fair while (unless Apple has recently streamlined the process), but hang in there. As I've said several times throughout this discussion, I emphasized during my own refund process that I love the design but, due to the effects that I and others have experienced, hate the material(s) Apple used to make the PBPs. It just occurred to me — I wonder if perhaps Best Buy and other retailers could put some pressure on Apple to solve this problem.

Hello Everyone,

After sending my email to Sport Chek on-line customer support I received a reply promptly inviting me to visit a retail location with the Powerbeats and consult with "our product experts". So I did this today and received a full refund. Obviously there were no product experts just the store manager, however no questions asked even though I bought them in April. I did tell her that Apple shouldn't be selling this product and she told me that they didnt sell them at that store and I was the first person to bring these back. So there was not much point continuing the dialogue. I do hope as more people come forward there is pressure on Apple to fix the problem. Refunds are fine but I'd prefer that other people would not have to go through this. Sigh... anyway this thread was useful as it determine the cause of the issue and made me feel I wasnt crazy! Good luck everyone out there and thank you for raising this on Apple discussions

It really is terrible. The issue started for me in February this year and since then I have been suffering in relative silence. I would have the problem and then stop using the PBPs before reintroduction on a number of occasions to try again. Every time the same terribly irritating and distressing issue has occurred. I have now purchased the comply foam ear bud covers from amazon. Unfortunately though, having tried again today, while the inner ear is ok, the hooks are still causing a problem as the back of my ears are sore, red where the hooks sat, weeping and itching intensely.

Having found and read the messages on this thread tonight I feel comforted by the solidarity of experience. Thank you so much to everyone for sharing your experiences. I should have done this sooner.

I will contact Apple and hope for a helpful response. I shall report back.

I did end up speaking with support and went through the same steps as aforementioned- questions, pictures....they sent a FedEx label, I sent the Beats back for a refund. They are supposed to contact me when they receive them and go for the next step. It’s been a week. I’ll have to stay on them and call back. I’m discouraged that it’s been three months for some folks and they have not received their money yet or the fact that you need a receipt. Mine were a gift also. They haven’t asked me for that yet.

My ears are just now clearing up from my last bout which was the beginning of September.
