MacBook Pro 2019 16" - HDMI not working ?

I just got a new 2019 MacBook Pro 16" and am generally quite pleased with it, but I need to do a presentation shortly and the HDMI output does not seem to work. I've tried two different HDMI adapters and two different displays, with mirroring on and off, and the results are the same with all combinations - the computer recognises the display, changes the resolution of the retina display to match the external display, but there is no video displayed on the external monitor. Do I need to take this computer back to the Apple Store ?
