You froze my phone during an ios update, I can't use the phone to get help

My iphone was frozen during an ios software update. Now I can't use the phone to get help or even get my serial number or whatever ios# I have to solicit help. All I have is a perpetual apple in a black screen. On top of that I though I synched and backed up the phone onto my Mac and I can't find any of the images or files anywhere on my back. So I have a massive issue with itunes here.
