has this feature disappeared from the mail app in Catalina?

I'd like to have the messages pane on top and not on the left. is this possible in catalina?

Apparently so. It is no longer available in preferences.

the post mentioned in your answer helped putting back the mail list on top as in the classic layout view.

Sure it was better before... but at least the preview pane is back to the top.
