Change input source on LG Ultrafine 4K display

Hi all,

I’m looking to set up a combined workstation with my 2018 Mac Mini and 2018 iPad Pro.

I currently have an LG Ultrafine 4K display plugged into two devices with one cable connection to my Mac Mini (Thunderbolt 3 USB-C) and the other cable connection to my iPad Pro (USB-C). What I’m hoping to find out is if there is a way to switch the inputs in order to select which device to display on the screen. Currently when both are plugged in, it favours the Mac Mini and will simply keep the iPad charged, but in order for me to display the iPad on the monitor, I need to disconnect the Mac Mini.

Not the end of the world but since there are no buttons on the monitor itself to make adjustments I was wondering if there was a way perhaps through a shortcut that you could easily switch between both devices without having to unplug one or the other. I’m sure with a KVM external switch of some kind this could be done but I was hoping to do it natively with the display if possible.

If not, if anyone has any recommendations for switches that may be trying to do the same thing, I’d appreciate the advice.

Hope that makes sense. Appreciate your thoughts.

Hello,

The LG Ultrafine display only supports 1 input device. You cannot have multiple computers plugged into it. You would need to physically unplug the USB-C lead from your Mac mini and plug it into your iPad.

The LG Ultrafine 4K display (not the 5K)

LG UltraFine 4K Display - Apple

has two Thunderbolt 3 ports. Either port can be used for the display to work from a Thunderbolt 3 or USB-C device, but if one port is being used by a computer via a Thunderbolt cable the other port can only be used to daisy-chain another Thunderbolt 3 display or device. (It may behave differently if you use a non-Thunderbolt USB-C cable to the Mac mini.)

To use the other port as display input, you don't have to unplug the Mac mini's cable, just shut down the Mac mini. It has a SSD, so rebooting is fast.
