often when my husband tries to use Firefox, he gets a Zeus virus detected "warning", is there any way to permanently block this?

I suspect you have installed adware/malware. Try running this trusted utility https://www.malwarebytes.com/mac/

Verify you are not running any Antivirus application—these love to throw up false negatives on the Mac, an are not needed. These AV softwares compete against Apples built in security.
