Unknown PC on my Secured Network

What kind of PC is that, showing in >Finder >Network? I don't have/own a PC and never connected one to my network. When I click on Get Info, there is not much information to it (see photo below).

When I go to >Utilities >AirPort Utility and click on my Time Capsule, I see all my devices that are connected to my network (e.g. my MBP, iPad, iPhone, WiFi-speakers, etc.) and a device that's called 2B79E5000000.local (the same device that's showing in >Finder >Network).

Under >System Preferences >Sharing my computer's name is Airwalker-MBP.local

What and who is 2B79E5000000.local? By the way, I am NOT using a virtual PC on my Mac.

Download the the free LanScan from the MacApp Store. There is an

optional subscription for advanced features which you won't need

so don't worry about.

It will scan your network (enter the desired IP range) and will give a pretty

detailed list. For one, in terms of MAC Addresses, it can generally determine

the manufacturer and you may further be able to ID the device (Manufacturers

can buy "blocks" of MAC addresses). If the device has a hostname, mDNS name,

or SMB name it will display those as well.

Great help, thanks! I have downloaded LanScan and see my MBP, my two iPads, my iPhone, my Canon Printer my 7 Sonos speakers, my Samsung TV and even my Garmin Scale (when it's on) on the list. Great app!

And now the problem is solved:

On LanScan, the Hostname and mDNS Name of my Canon Printer is 2B79E5000000. The PC appearing on my Network in the Finder and on AirPort Utility is described as 2B79E5000000.local

Stange that a printer is displayed as a PC, but at least now I know. Thank you all for your contributions to my post! :-)

And that's why it shows up as a PC?

The presence of an SMB (Windows) file share service is what that icon means.

That’s one of the ways that macOS uses to detect a Windows or other system present on the local network.

And yes, if you look very carefully, it’s a BSOD.

As for what that file share is doing, check the manual.

It’s probably used for where scans are located for later retrieval.

A Windows Phone or a Microsoft Surface might appear as such.

if you are using a password that has any dictionary words on your WiFi, you should change it.

Vowels are easy to guess. Mix letters, numbers, and and funny characters and cases. 16 characters now is best

for security. 8 characters can be characters you remember, 8 can be characters that are different you write somewhere physically secure (not a computer online!)

and look at "All Connected Devices" for common names:

One clue is the hexadecimal address of the machine. Generally that matches the Media Access Control address of the device. This is usually labelled on the outside of the device as a "MAC Address." (no relationship to Apple Mac, or Macintosh).

It is a unique address for every networkable device using letters and numbers 0 through 9 and A through F.

Thanks guys! This morning, when I turned on my MBP, the PC shown on my network last night, wasn't there anymore. After about 10 minutes, it showed up again in AirPort Utility as 2B79E5000000.local, but was NOT visible under >Finder >Network. After another 10 minutes it also showed under >Finder >Network.

I recognise all my devices, that are connected to my WiFi network in AirPort Utility: MBP, 2 iPads, iPhone, all my Sonos devices and my Samsung TV shown as Samsung TV or TIZEN (description changes once in a while).

I have a Samsung One Connect Box, but I hardly doubt, that this device, which is a media receiver with a built-in tuner connected to my Samsung TV, is shown separately from my Samsung TV on my network as a PC, since I believe it has no WiFi. There is no MAC number on the One Connect Box.

Another device I have connected to my WiFi network is a WiFi enabled scale from Garmin. I wonder if this is the PC showing on my network? No MAC number on the scale neither and it does not show up in AirPort Utility once connected to the network.

I will consider changing my WiFi network password and reconnect all my devices from scratch and see what happens.

I used it quite a bit when I was working on embedded processors with

a network interfaces. It was the only way to know if they were on the network

and narrow down communication issues.
