Phone keeps saying "unpairing" during set up process with apple watch

I bought a used Apple Watch series 2 today. When I got home to pair them, my phone keeps popping up with a message saying "unpairing" while I'm in the middle of pairing my phone and watch. I've tried restarting both devices, I even tried resetting the network settings on my phone. No matter how I try to pair the two devices, it will stop me and say "unpairing". Has anyone else experienced this? Any suggestions?
